Role Context
The Engineer - Process Automation supports safe and efficient plant operations by ensuring process automation systems remain reliable, integrated, maintainable, and aligned with company and international standards. This position evaluates existing systems for obsolescence, spare parts availability, vendor support, interoperability, and future upgrade needs. The role also provides technical and engineering input for process control systems, Industrial Control Systems (ICS), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), telecommunications, telemetry, real-time information systems, laboratory systems, alarm management, optimization, and higher-level manufacturing execution applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze and coordinate process automation system installation, modification, maintenance, commissioning, and upgrade activities.
- Assess existing telecommunications, telemetry, ICs, DCS, process control systems, real-time plant information systems, and laboratory management systems.
- Review automation systems for obsolescence, spare parts availability, vendor support, interoperability, integration, reliability, and long‑term maintainability.
- Audit system performance and identify opportunities to improve process performance monitoring, operational reliability, and standards compliance.
- Provide technical expertise for process automation engineering design, application support, and system improvement projects.
- Support development and updating of technical specification documents for automation systems and related applications.
- Conduct economic feasibility studies to evaluate the financial and technical viability of proposed automation applications or upgrades.
- Develop functional specifications, design documents, as‑built documentation, user manuals, and training materials for minor application modifications.
- Coordinate with site maintenance personnel on vendor support, system modifications, troubleshooting, and upgrade requirements.
- Provide engineering support to plants in real‑time process information management systems and laboratory information management systems.
- Support operational and technical improvements in optimization, alarm management, control loop performance monitoring, and MES applications.
- Develop scopes of work and tender documents for process automation projects and system enhancement requirements.
- Participate in technical bid evaluation to ensure proposed solutions meet company standards, technical specifications, and operational needs.
- Coordinate and participate in implementation of approved projects, including installation, commissioning, future upgrades, and closeout support.
- Monitor project execution to support timely completion within approved budget and technical scope.
- Ensure automation system activities conform to company standards, international standards, HSE expectations, and plant operating requirements.
- Work with engineering, operations, maintenance, vendors, contractors, and project teams to resolve technical issues and improve system performance.
- Provide technical recommendations that improve automation reliability, data availability, process visibility, and operational efficiency.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor Degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical, Controls, Chemical, or Automation.
- Minimum 6 years of experience in automation systems design, installation, commissioning, operations support, continuing maintenance, testing, and control system validation.
- Experience within a large industrial organization is required, preferably in the oil and gas industry.
- Strong knowledge of process automation systems, ICs, DCS, process control systems, telemetry, telecommunications, and plant information systems.
- Practical experience with real‑time process information management systems and laboratory information management systems.
- Good understanding of system obsolescence reviews, spare parts strategy, vendor support, integration, interoperability, and upgrade planning.
- Ability to prepare technical specifications, functional specifications, design documents, as‑built documentation, user manuals, and training materials.
- Experience in alarm management, control loop performance monitoring, process optimization, MES applications, and performance improvement studies.
- Familiarity with scope of work development, tender documentation, technical bid evaluation, project implementation, installation, and commissioning.
- Strong analytical, coordination, troubleshooting, communication, and technical reporting skills.
- Ability to work with plant teams, maintenance personnel, contractors, vendors, and engineering stakeholders.
- Strong commitment to safe operations, reliable systems, technical quality, and continuous improvement.
