Process Automation Engineer - APC in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates is an Oil and Energy opportunity for an experienced process control and optimization professional with strong expertise in advanced process control, real time optimization, alarm management, DCS applications, control loop performance, and digital process automation. The role supports ADNOC Group operations by reviewing, improving, and implementing process automation systems that enhance HSE performance, plant reliability, profitability, sustainability, efficiency, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Review, study, and provide technical expertise in process automation, including base layer process control, advanced process control, real time optimization, alarm management, digitalization, and automation systems.
- Assess control loop performance and recommend practical improvements that increase plant efficiency, reduce operating costs, and support safe production.
- Review process automation systems periodically and recommend upgrades or enhancements in compliance with HSE measures, engineering standards, and international best practices.
- Facilitate implementation of procedures and controls covering process automation activities at site to ensure planned output and consistent execution.
- Develop, review, and update relevant automation procedures to maintain robust, reliable, and standardized process control practices.
- Monitor and evaluate existing process automation applications and systems in terms of uptime, performance, monetary benefits, standardization, and obsolescence.
- Conduct technical and commercial analysis of different automation alternatives to identify optimum solutions for plant operations.
- Lead or review feasibility studies performed by external consultants to evaluate the financial and technical viability of process automation applications.
- Lead approved process automation projects carried out by external consultants through scope of work development, tender documents, technical bid evaluation, engineering, installation, and commissioning.
- Develop and review scopes of work for process automation implementation while ensuring compliance with HSE requirements and operational standards.
- Develop or lead the development of functional specifications, design documents, as‑built documentation, user manuals, training materials, and maintenance procedures for new and existing applications.
- Ensure process automation systems and applications are effectively utilized by operations, engineering, and maintenance teams.
- Troubleshoot process automation systems and related applications to maximize availability, reliability, and user confidence.
- Identify and implement optimization programs that enable the plant to operate at optimum conditions with improved yield and efficiency.
- Lead and facilitate alarm rationalization workshops and ensure recommendations are implemented effectively and on time.
- Support alarm suppression and alarm performance improvement activities to reduce nuisance alarms and strengthen operator response.
- Evaluate vendors and contractors from a technical perspective to support procurement prequalification and selection processes.
- Conduct knowledge‑sharing sessions, technical awareness programs, and training activities to sustain process automation solutions across plant teams.
- Review and execute process control and automation technical standards, engineering procedures, and application guidelines.
- Support automation input during concept, select, and define project phases to ensure process control requirements are properly embedded in project design.
- Monitor latest technology developments in process automation, DCS, ICs, dashboards, APC, RTO, and control applications.
- Coordinate with operations, maintenance, engineering, HSE, procurement, contractors, vendors, and consultants to support safe and effective automation delivery.
- Maintain accurate records, technical documentation, performance reports, and implementation updates for process automation systems and improvement projects.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering, Process Control Engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in process control, process automation, and optimization within the Oil and Energy industry.
- Solid knowledge of process control and optimization systems including DCS, BLPC, APC, RTO, CLPM, AMS, dashboards, and related automation applications.
- Working background in implementing at least 2 real time optimization projects and 4 advanced process control projects.
- Experience leading alarm rationalization, alarm suppression, and alarm performance improvement activities.
- Strong knowledge of process automation engineering standards, process control procedures, technical specifications, and execution requirements.
- Experience in developing, reviewing, and implementing functional specifications, design documentation, user manuals, training materials, and maintenance procedures.
- Good understanding of latest technological developments and their impact on plant operations, process control, DCS, ICs, and digital applications.
- Extensive knowledge of process control guidelines and specifications across concept, select, and define project phases.
- Good understanding of national and international regulations, process automation standards, and engineering compliance requirements.
- Strong knowledge of HSE principles and their practical application in Oil and Energy operations.
- Ability to review feasibility studies, tender documents, scopes of work, technical bids, contractor deliverables, and commissioning plans.
- Strong troubleshooting ability for automation systems, optimization applications, alarm systems, and process information management tools.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to conduct training, share knowledge, and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.
