Role Context

The Process Automation Engineer - Control Systems supports safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations by evaluating automation infrastructure and providing specialist engineering input for system upgrades, modifications, and new installations. The role covers industrial control systems, distributed control systems, telemetry, telecommunications, real‑time process information platforms, laboratory information systems, alarm management, and manufacturing execution applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze and coordinate the installation, modification, commissioning, testing, and upgrading of process automation systems.
  • Assess telecommunications, telemetry, industrial control systems, distributed control systems, process control systems, and related automation infrastructure.
  • Evaluate system obsolescence, spare parts availability, vendor support, integration capability, interoperability, cybersecurity considerations, and operational reliability.
  • Confirm that automation systems comply with company specifications, engineering practices, applicable international standards, and plant operating requirements.
  • Audit system performance and identify opportunities for process monitoring, control improvement, automation enhancement, and operational optimization.
  • Provide engineering support for real‑time plant information management systems and laboratory information management systems.
  • Support alarm management, control loop performance monitoring, advanced process optimization, and higher‑level manufacturing execution system applications.
  • Develop and update technical specifications for automation applications, system modifications, integration requirements, and plant upgrades.
  • Prepare functional design specifications, engineering documentation, operating instructions, user manuals, training materials, and as‑built records.
  • Conduct technical and economic feasibility studies to determine the operational, financial, and engineering viability of proposed applications.
  • Coordinate with site maintenance teams, system vendors, service providers, and operations personnel on technical support, modifications, upgrades, and troubleshooting.
  • Review system architecture and recommend solutions that improve availability, maintainability, performance, scalability, and lifecycle support.
  • Develop scopes of work, tender packages, system requirements, and technical documentation for automation contracts.
  • Participate in technical bid evaluations and assess vendor proposals against company standards, functional requirements, and project specifications.
  • Coordinate approved automation projects through engineering, procurement, installation, testing, commissioning, handover, and future upgrade stages.
  • Monitor project progress, technical compliance, cost performance, and completion schedules to support delivery within approved budgets.
  • Verify control system validation requirements and confirm that testing and commissioning activities follow approved philosophies and procedures.
  • Provide technical guidance to plant teams during automation system incidents, performance degradation, integration issues, and application failures.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records and ensure that automation documents reflect installed system configurations.
  • Promote continuous improvement by identifying technologies, tools, and working methods that enhance process control performance and plant reliability.
Ideal Profile
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or an equivalent discipline.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in industrial automation system design, installation, commissioning, operation, testing, validation, and maintenance.
  • Experience within a large industrial organization is required, preferably in oil and gas, petrochemical, refinery, processing, or energy operations.
  • Strong understanding of industrial control systems, distributed control systems, telemetry, telecommunications, and process control architecture.
  • Practical experience with real‑time process information management and laboratory information management platforms.
  • Knowledge of alarm management, control loop performance monitoring, process optimization, and manufacturing execution applications.
  • Ability to evaluate automation system obsolescence, vendor support, spare parts risks, interoperability, and upgrade requirements.
  • Experience preparing functional specifications, scopes of work, tender documents, technical evaluations, and as‑built documentation.
  • Demonstrated involvement in automation project installation, commissioning, system migration, and lifecycle upgrades.
  • Ability to conduct technical feasibility assessments and contribute to economic evaluations of proposed solutions.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, coordination, and technical reporting capabilities.
