The Science Technician will provide essential technical support across the Science Department by ensuring laboratories, equipment, materials, and solutions are prepared accurately before each lesson. The role requires close coordination with teachers and departmental leaders, careful attention to safety, and reliable control of science resources. Effective laboratory support will reduce lesson delays, improve practical learning, protect students and staff, and strengthen the overall quality of science provision.
Key Responsibilities
- Review practical lesson requirements and prepare the necessary equipment, apparatus, chemicals, and materials.
- Set up laboratory workstations before lessons according to teacher instructions and approved procedures.
- Prepare laboratory solutions using accurate measurements, correct concentrations, and suitable containers.
- Label all prepared solutions, samples, chemicals, and materials clearly.
- Check scientific equipment before use and identify damaged, contaminated, or unsafe items.
- Clean, dry, inspect, and return laboratory apparatus after practical activities.
- Maintain laboratories, preparation rooms, storage areas, and work surfaces in a safe and orderly condition.
- Organize equipment and materials through clear and efficient storage systems.
- Store chemicals according to compatibility, hazard classification, and school safety requirements.
- Ensure frequently used equipment is accessible while keeping controlled materials secure.
- Monitor stocks of chemicals, glassware, consumables, protective equipment, and replacement parts.
- Prepare lists of depleted, damaged, expired, or required items.
- Assist the Science Department with collating requirements for the annual order.
- Check deliveries against approved orders and report shortages, damage, or incorrect items.
- Record newly received materials and place them in the appropriate storage locations.
- Maintain accurate stock registers, issue records, and inventory information.
- Identify expired or unusable materials and arrange safe disposal through approved procedures.
- Support teachers during practical lessons when technical assistance is required.
- Respond promptly to instructions from the Head of Science and Senior Science Technician.
- Assist with printing, photocopying, laminating, and other reprographic requirements.
- Prepare worksheets, labels, notices, and supporting classroom resources where requested.
- Report broken equipment, chemical spills, electrical concerns, or other hazards immediately.
- Follow laboratory health and safety procedures during preparation, lessons, and cleaning.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment when handling chemicals or technical materials.
- Maintain access to safety equipment, including eyewash facilities, spill kits, fire controls, and first-aid supplies.
- Support emergency procedures involving spills, breakages, burns, or other laboratory incidents.
- Keep technical records relating to inspections, repairs, stock, orders, and safety checks.
- Participate in staff briefings, departmental meetings, and relevant school training.
- Complete annual safeguarding, child protection, health and safety, and performance development training.
- Follow the school 's computer Acceptable Use Policy when accessing digital systems.

Ideal Profile
The successful candidate will hold a bachelor 's degree. An A Level qualification in Science would be an advantage. Applicants should have previous experience in a science laboratory, school laboratory, educational support setting, or comparable technical environment.
- The preferred candidate will understand the importance of accurate preparation, safe chemical handling, organized storage, equipment care, and reliable stock records.
- Familiarity with practical science activities and common laboratory apparatus will support effective performance.
