Role Context

The Laboratory Technician supports practical teaching by ensuring laboratories, equipment, materials and technical resources are ready for safe and effective use. Working closely with academic staff, the role helps translate lesson plans into properly prepared experiments and practical activities while maintaining strong standards of safety, organization and equipment care. The position has a direct impact on teaching quality and student participation. Accurate preparation, reliable equipment and efficient stock control allow teachers to deliver practical learning without unnecessary disruption while giving students access to safe, hands-on scientific and technical experiences.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day technical support across science, ICT and LEGO laboratories and related classrooms.
  • Prepare equipment, chemicals, materials and apparatus required for practical lessons.
  • Liaise with teaching staff regarding lesson schedules, experiment requirements and laboratory work plans.
  • Set up laboratory activities in advance and ensure all required resources are available.
  • Conduct trial runs of experiments before scheduled classes to confirm procedures and expected outcomes.
  • Demonstrate laboratory techniques and correct use of equipment when required.
  • Support teachers during practical lessons and provide appropriate technical guidance.
  • Assist students with the safe use of laboratory equipment under established school procedures.
  • Prepare and issue apparatus in accordance with subject plans and teacher requirements.
  • Retrieve, clean and store equipment after practical activities.
  • Maintain science, ICT and LEGO laboratory spaces in an orderly and operational condition.
  • Monitor stock levels of equipment, tools, chemicals and consumable materials.
  • Maintain detailed inventory records including quantities and expiration dates where applicable.
  • Ensure chemicals and other laboratory materials are stored safely and appropriately.
  • Conduct routine equipment inspections and periodic operational tests.
  • Identify damaged or defective apparatus and arrange or complete minor repairs where appropriate.
  • Maintain records of equipment servicing, repairs and preventative maintenance.
  • Monitor laboratory facilities and report maintenance requirements promptly.
  • Support effective use of specialist and high-value equipment across practical teaching activities.
  • Ensure all laboratory users follow relevant health and safety procedures.
  • Promote safe handling, storage and disposal practices for laboratory materials.
  • Check that equipment is clean and in suitable condition before and after use.
  • Maintain practical lesson records, experiment information and other laboratory documentation as required.
  • Support individual students undertaking research projects and practical assignments.
  • Assist with laboratory-related extracurricular activities and STEM initiatives.
  • Provide technical advice to staff and students regarding equipment, apparatus and practical procedures.
  • Coordinate laboratory resources to prevent clashes and maximize availability.
  • Maintain accurate logs that support safety, compliance, stock management and operational continuity.
  • Contribute to a professional and well-organized learning environment throughout the school.
Ideal Profile

Candidates should hold a bachelor 's degree and have at least 3 years of experience in a laboratory technician or closely related technical support role. Previous experience working in a school laboratory will be particularly valuable because the position requires regular coordination with teachers and students as well as preparation of practical learning activities. Experience supporting the US Common Core curriculum will be an advantage, especially where laboratory activities are aligned with structured science and STEM learning objectives.
