Role Context

The Principal Specialist - Environmental Management acts as a subject matter expert within the Health, Safety, Environment, and Security function. The position develops environmental governance frameworks, interprets legal requirements, monitors operational compliance, and advises management on risks affecting engineering, construction, fabrication, marine, offshore, and site‑based activities. The role requires an integrated approach to environmental risk and impact management across projects, contractors, vessels, and operational facilities. Through auditing, performance analysis, permitting, investigations, and stakeholder engagement, the specialist will help ensure that environmental obligations are translated into practical controls and measurable project outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain environmental management systems aligned with corporate policies, contractual commitments, legislation, customer expectations, and ISO 14001 requirements.
• Maintain detailed knowledge of company, facility, vessel, and project‑specific HSES terminology, deliverables, procedures, and compliance obligations.
• Integrate environmental risk management with wider health, safety, security, engineering, construction, and operational processes.
• Identify significant environmental aspects, potential impacts, and critical activities across engineering, procurement, construction, installation, commissioning, and operations.
• Review existing mitigation measures and confirm that environmental controls remain suitable, effective, and proportionate to identified risks.
• Develop environmental plans, procedures, instructions, registers, and project‑specific control documents.
• Advise project and site leadership on environmental compliance, performance, operational risks, and improvement priorities.

• Ensure investigations identify underlying causes, practical corrective measures, accountable owners, and realistic completion dates.
• Monitor corrective actions and recommendations through verification and formal close‑out.
• Complete environmental reports required by company procedures, customer requirements, permits, and statutory authorities.
• Review management of change requests and provide environmental risk, permitting, compliance, and control input.

Ideal Profile

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Safety, Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Master's degree, MBA, or another relevant postgraduate qualification is preferred.
• 7-8 years of environmental experience within the energy, construction, engineering, or EPCI industry.
• Practical exposure to project execution involving engineering, fabrication, construction, marine, onshore, or offshore operations.
• In‑depth knowledge of environmental management systems and ISO 14001 requirements.
• Lead Auditor training and practical audit experience involving ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, or ISO 50001.
• Strong understanding of local environmental laws, regulations, codes, permits, reporting duties, and recognised international standards.
• Experience developing environmental plans, procedures, compliance registers, permit applications, and assurance programmes.
• Ability to interpret regulatory changes and evaluate their effect on projects, vessels, sites, and business plans.
• Experience leading environmental investigations, root‑cause analysis, corrective action management, and formal close‑out.
• Demonstrated capability in environmental performance measurement, statistical analysis, trend evaluation, and KPI reporting.
• Strong technical writing skills for reports, procedures, tender responses, permit documents, and management presentations.
• Ability to communicate environmental risks and performance clearly to senior management, clients, contractors, and regulators.
