Role Context
The Reliability Engineer - Asset Performance will provide technical expertise to operational and engineering teams on equipment reliability, maintenance optimisation, condition monitoring, and failure prevention. The role will help shift maintenance activities from reactive repairs toward structured preventive, predictive, and risk-based strategies. Working across mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines, the engineer will analyse asset performance, identify recurring equipment problems, recommend technical improvements, and support equipment-selection decisions for new and modified facilities. These activities will contribute to higher equipment availability, improved production continuity, safer operations, and lower lifecycle costs.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct Root Cause Failure Analysis for significant, recurring, or business-critical equipment failures.
- Gather operating data, maintenance history, inspection findings, failure evidence, and stakeholder input during investigations.
- Identify direct, contributing, and systemic causes of equipment breakdowns.
- Develop corrective and preventive recommendations that address underlying failure mechanisms.
- Track approved Root Cause Failure Analysis actions through implementation and effectiveness review.
- Conduct Asset Performance Management studies to improve equipment visibility, reliability, and maintenance decision-making.
- Support the configuration and use of reliability data, asset-health indicators, and performance dashboards.
- Perform Reliability Centered Maintenance studies for critical equipment and systems.
- Review equipment functions, failure modes, effects, consequences, and existing maintenance controls.
- Recommend appropriate preventive, predictive, condition-based, failure-finding, or run-to-failure strategies.
- Convert maintenance programmes from reactive repair models to proactive reliability-based approaches.
- Assess the effect of equipment failures on safety, production, environment, quality, cost, and business continuity.
- Select maintenance strategies that minimise operational risk and total lifecycle cost.
- Use equipment criticality and failure history to prioritise reliability-improvement initiatives.
- Apply predictive maintenance methods to identify developing defects before functional failure.
- Support the use of condition-monitoring techniques appropriate to different asset types.
- Assist operating sites in developing monitoring methods that accurately reflect actual equipment condition.
- Review vibration, temperature, lubrication, electrical, process, and performance data where applicable.
- Identify abnormal equipment behaviour and recommend inspection, maintenance, or operational intervention.
- Maintain bad-actor equipment lists and provide periodic performance reports.
- Analyse repeated failures, high maintenance expenditure, poor availability, and chronic operating problems.
- Develop targeted improvement plans for equipment identified as reliability concerns.
- Monitor performance after corrective action to confirm that reliability has improved.
- Participate in brownfield and greenfield engineering activities to improve maintainability and asset reliability.
- Review engineering designs and project packages from a reliability and lifecycle perspective.
- Recommend suitable equipment selection, capacity, configuration, redundancy, and maintainability requirements.
- Assess proposed equipment and technologies for reliability, supportability, and operational compatibility.
- Identify potential obsolescence risks affecting equipment, spare parts, software, or technical support.
- Recommend alternatives where proposed equipment may create future reliability or maintainability concerns.
- Review proposed new solutions and provide technical recommendations before implementation.
- Research equipment-upgrade and refurbishment options for ageing or underperforming assets.
- Provide technical advice during major overhauls, equipment replacement, and new installations.
- Recommend modifications, upgrades, or replacement where existing equipment cannot achieve required performance.
- Evaluate repair versus replacement options using reliability, cost, risk, and lifecycle considerations.
- Support technical assessments of mechanical equipment and associated systems.
- Lead reliability schemes and improvement work covering mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines.
- Coordinate with maintenance, operations, inspection, engineering, projects, and technical-service teams.
- Facilitate multidisciplinary reliability workshops and technical reviews.
- Engage equipment manufacturers, consultants, and specialist service providers when additional expertise is required.
- Prepare technical reports, reliability studies, equipment recommendations, and management presentations.
- Maintain accurate records of analyses, assumptions, findings, actions, and performance results.
- Share reliability knowledge and lessons learned with operational and technical teams.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of reliability procedures, tools, standards, and engineering practices.
