Role Context
The Physics Lab Assistant helps ensure that practical science teaching can be delivered safely, efficiently, and without disruption. By preparing apparatus, maintaining equipment, controlling laboratory resources, and assisting during experiments, the role supports both academic delivery and student safety. Reliable laboratory management also enables Physics teachers to conduct demonstrations and practical assessments with the required materials available and ready for use.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare Physics apparatus, instruments, materials, and other resources before practical lessons.
- Arrange laboratory workstations according to experiment requirements and teacher instructions.
- Assist Physics teachers with demonstrations, experiments, and practical activities.
- Support students during laboratory sessions while ensuring equipment is handled correctly.
- Explain safe equipment-use procedures when directed by the supervising teacher.
- Check apparatus before practical sessions to confirm that items are functional and suitable for use.
- Inspect equipment regularly and identify damaged, defective, or malfunctioning components.
- Report repair and replacement requirements to the appropriate teacher or department lead.
- Help maintain laboratory equipment in good working condition.
- Clean and return apparatus to designated storage areas following practical sessions.
- Ensure benches, preparation areas, and laboratory spaces remain organized.
- Follow established laboratory safety procedures and emergency protocols.
- Maintain appropriate storage arrangements for equipment and laboratory materials.
- Monitor consumable usage and identify items approaching minimum stock levels.
- Maintain laboratory inventory records and equipment registers.
- Coordinate requests for replenishment of commonly used laboratory materials.
- Support preparation for practical examinations and assessment activities.
- Organize equipment required for scheduled demonstrations and curriculum experiments.
- Assist with safe movement and storage of sensitive Physics apparatus.
- Maintain relevant laboratory documentation and usage records.
- Work closely with Physics teachers and other Science Department staff.
- Support departmental planning for practical activities and laboratory requirements.
- Help maintain an environment where students can conduct experiments safely and productively.
- Report potential safety hazards and equipment concerns promptly.
- Carry out additional laboratory-related duties assigned by the Head of Science Department or school management.
Ideal Profile
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Physics, Science, Laboratory Technology, or a related field.
- Previous experience as a Physics Lab Assistant, Laboratory Technician, or Science Lab Technician is preferred.
- School or educational laboratory experience is particularly relevant.
- Good knowledge of Physics laboratory apparatus and practical procedures.
- Familiarity with equipment used in mechanics, electricity, optics, waves, heat, and general Physics experiments.
- Understanding of safe equipment handling and storage procedures.
- Knowledge of laboratory emergency and safety requirements.
- Ability to prepare apparatus accurately according to lesson instructions.
- Experience maintaining stock records and laboratory inventories.
- Ability to identify damaged or malfunctioning equipment.
- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
