Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in special education or learning support.

Role Context The Middle School Special Educator will work within the Inclusion team to ensure students with additional learning needs receive structured, practical, and measurable support. The role combines direct intervention with collaborative planning, requiring close coordination with subject teachers, parents, counsellors, therapists, and other specialists. A central part of the position is translating assessment findings into realistic support strategies. Through Individual Education Plans, differentiated instruction, accommodations, scaffolding, and regular progress reviews, the educator will help students participate more successfully in mainstream learning while developing greater independence and confidence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver individual and small-group interventions addressing academic, social, emotional, and behavioural development.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and review Individual Education Plans for students with identified learning needs.
  • Establish measurable IEP targets and evaluate progress against agreed outcomes.
  • Use assessment data, classroom observations, and teacher feedback to identify barriers to learning.
  • Design intervention strategies that respond to each student 's strengths, needs, and stage of development.
  • Collaborate with subject teachers to implement differentiation, scaffolding, accommodations, and inclusive teaching strategies.
  • Support teachers in adapting learning materials, classroom tasks, and assessment approaches where appropriate.
  • Promote meaningful participation of students with additional learning needs in mainstream lessons and school activities.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of interventions and adjust support according to progress evidence.
  • Maintain accurate records of student support, assessment findings, intervention plans, targets, and review outcomes.
  • Participate in student case reviews, parent meetings, inclusion meetings, and multidisciplinary discussions.
  • Work closely with parents to communicate progress, priorities, and appropriate support approaches.
  • Coordinate with counsellors, therapists, specialists, and teaching colleagues to maintain consistent student support.
  • Strengthen students ' self-confidence, independence, emotional wellbeing, and ability to advocate for their learning needs.
  • Contribute to the development of school-wide inclusive education practices.
  • Share practical inclusion strategies and specialist knowledge with teaching staff through professional learning and collaborative planning.
  • Support relevant school initiatives focused on student wellbeing, access, participation, and achievement.
Ideal Profile
  • Bachelor 's degree in Special Education, Inclusive Education, Education, Psychology, or a closely related discipline.
  • Relevant teaching or special education qualification is preferred.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of professional experience in special education, inclusion, or learning support.
  • Previous experience supporting Middle School students is advantageous.
  • Strong working knowledge of Individual Education Plans and target-setting processes.
  • Practical understanding of differentiation, scaffolding, accommodations, and intervention planning.
  • Ability to interpret assessment information and translate findings into appropriate learning support.
  • Experience supporting students with varied academic, social, emotional, or behavioural needs.
  • Confident communicator capable of working constructively with students, parents, teachers, and external specialists.
  • Strong organisational skills for managing documentation, student records, reviews, and intervention schedules.
  • Collaborative approach to working within multidisciplinary and school-based teams.
