Job Summary
The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading and managing mechanical engineering activities on construction projects, ensuring proper planning, execution, testing, and commissioning of mechanical systems and equipment in compliance with project specifications, approved drawings, applicable standards, quality requirements, and HSE practices. The role provides technical leadership, coordinates with stakeholders, and resolves complex engineering and site issues to achieve project objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee installation, testing, pre-commissioning, and commissioning of mechanical equipment and systems.
- Review and approve project specifications, drawings, shop drawings, material submittals, and technical documents to ensure compliance with scope and contract requirements.
- Plan mechanical work activities and sequencing, ensuring availability of approved drawings, materials, equipment, and resources to meet project schedules.
- Prepare, manage, and close Technical Queries (TQs/RFIs), deviations, concessions, waiver requests, and exemption lists.
- Perform and review material take-offs (MTOs) and provide technical input to procurement and planning teams.
- Coordinate with project teams, clients, consultants, subcontractors, vendors, and Third-Party Inspectors (TPI) to resolve technical and execution issues.
- Identify scope changes or variations related to mechanical works and support technical discussions and agreements.
- Prepare, review, and implement project procedures, method statements, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), and work instructions.
- Provide onsite technical supervision and guidance during construction, installation, testing, and commissioning phases.
- Monitor mechanical work progress, approvals, inspections, and readiness for handover.
- Lead preparation of punch lists, mechanical completion, and close-out documentation.
- Ensure compliance with applicable international codes and standards (ASME, API, AWS, ASTM, or equivalent).
- Mentor junior engineers and support their technical development.
- Ensure all mechanical activities comply with project HSE requirements, quality standards, and approved work practices.
Required Qualifications & Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree (BE / B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering.
- 10+ years experience in mechanical engineering roles within construction projects (preferable high-rise building projects).
- Strong expertise in mechanical systems, equipment installation, and commissioning practices.
- Proven ability to lead site activities and manage multidisciplinary coordination.
- Strong understanding of international mechanical codes and standards relevant to project scope.
- Proficient in reviewing and approving shop drawings and as-built drawings.
- Excellent leadership, coordination, and communication skills.
- Strong knowledge of construction HSE requirements, work practices, and quality systems.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in complex, fast-paced project environments.
