Role Context
The Materials Engineer provides technical control over the selection, testing, acceptance, and application of construction materials across roads, bridges, and infrastructure works. Combining field inspection with engineering supervision, the position helps ensure that permanent works are constructed using compliant materials and approved procedures. Effective materials engineering reduces quality failures, limits rework, supports structural durability, and provides documented assurance that completed infrastructure satisfies contractual and technical requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect and supervise material-related activities across roads, bridges, and associated infrastructure construction.
- Verify that construction activities are executed in accordance with approved project specifications and quality requirements.
- Review construction materials before incorporation into permanent works and confirm compliance with approved technical criteria.
- Evaluate material submittals, technical data, certificates, and supporting documentation for conformity with project requirements.
- Monitor the quality of materials used for earthworks, pavement construction, structural concrete, bridge works, drainage, and utilities.
- Coordinate sampling and testing requirements for soil, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, steel, and other civil engineering materials.
- Witness relevant field and laboratory testing and assess results against specified acceptance criteria.
- Verify that approved sources, suppliers, manufacturers, and material types are used during construction.
- Monitor material handling, storage, transportation, and application to preserve required quality characteristics.
- Inspect road and pavement works to confirm appropriate materials, layer construction, and workmanship.
- Review concrete and structural material quality for bridge and infrastructure elements.
- Coordinate with site engineers and inspectors on material-related observations and construction quality concerns.
- Identify non-conforming materials or workmanship and initiate appropriate corrective action.
- Follow up on quality deficiencies to confirm satisfactory resolution before affected works proceed.
- Review contractor inspection and testing documentation for completeness and technical compliance.
- Maintain traceable material approvals, test reports, inspection records, and quality documentation.
- Support technical evaluation of alternative materials or proposed changes when required.
- Monitor consistency between approved material specifications and actual site implementation.
- Provide materials engineering input during quality meetings, technical reviews, and contractor coordination.
- Assist project leadership with resolving material performance and construction quality issues.
- Support audits, completion inspections, closeout documentation, and handover requirements.
- Promote consistent application of project QA/QC procedures throughout roads, bridge, and infrastructure construction activities.
Ideal Profile
- Professional experience in materials engineering, construction quality, or supervision of roads, infrastructure, and bridge projects.
- Civil Engineering education appropriate to a materials engineering position.
- Strong understanding of construction materials and their application within transportation infrastructure.
- Practical knowledge of soil, aggregates, asphalt, concrete, reinforcement steel, and associated civil materials.
- Experience with road pavement materials, earthworks, structural concrete, and bridge construction is highly relevant.
- Ability to interpret project specifications, material requirements, test standards, and engineering documentation.
- Experience reviewing material submittals, certificates, test reports, and contractor quality records.
- Good understanding of field and laboratory testing procedures used on major civil engineering projects.
- Ability to assess test results and determine compliance with specified acceptance requirements.
- Strong knowledge of QA/QC processes, inspection procedures, non-conformance management, and corrective actions.
- Capable of coordinating with contractors, laboratories, inspectors, site engineers, and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Experience working within major Dubai or UAE transportation infrastructure projects is advantageous.
- Methodical approach to quality documentation, technical reporting, and material traceability.
