Role Context

Environmental Engineer - Operations Compliance in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates is an Oil and Energy opportunity focused on environmental performance, emissions control, ISO 14001 implementation, waste management, effluent monitoring and plant reliability. ADNOC Group is hiring an experienced engineering professional to monitor operational environmental performance, reduce flaring and emissions, strengthen compliance systems and provide technical guidance across complex gas, refining and petrochemical operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor plant discharges including flaring, atmospheric emissions and liquid effluents on a daily basis.
  • Investigate environmental deviations and provide management with technical explanations and recommended corrective actions.
  • Implement and evaluate environmental programs covering operational risks and potential impacts on health and the environment.
  • Coordinate site implementation and continual improvement of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
  • Provide technical advice on environmental controls, operating practices and compliance requirements.
  • Develop and review calculations used to quantify plant flaring and atmospheric emissions.
  • Support establishment of measurement systems, monitoring tools and software used for emissions and flaring management.
  • Review environmental data generated from plant monitoring systems for accuracy, consistency and reporting purposes.
  • Supervise preparation of daily, monthly and annual environmental performance reports.
  • Plan and support ambient air quality monitoring programs.
  • Coordinate emission source testing to identify and quantify significant airborne contaminants.
  • Recommend appropriate environmental monitoring instruments, sampling equipment and field measurement systems.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to field personnel involved in environmental protection activities.
  • Participate in environmental planning, budgeting and preparation of scopes of work.
  • Contribute technical information to sustainability reporting activities.
  • Advise operating departments on hazardous and non-hazardous waste management requirements.
  • Prepare annual waste projections and coordinate waste management requirements with relevant departments.
  • Provide guidance on effluent treatment, sampling programs and laboratory analysis.
  • Review operating processes and plant performance to identify environmental and technical concerns.
  • Support Operations teams in resolving chronic process problems that affect plant reliability or environmental performance.
  • Lead or participate in integrity reviews, HSE assessments and multidisciplinary technical studies.
  • Participate in HAZOP and related process safety studies.
  • Review plant trip investigations and provide guidance on technical findings and corrective measures.
  • Support incident investigations involving operational, process or environmental events.
  • Coordinate Operations requirements during major plant overhauls and shutdowns.
  • Assist with shutdown preparation, catalyst replacement and inspection of major equipment.
  • Provide operational input for overhaul completion reports and plant start-up activities.
  • Coordinate technical matters involving ADNOC Offshore, ADNOC Gas Processing and other relevant Group entities.
  • Liaise with Process Engineering teams, specialist consultants and vendors when resolving complex operational problems.
  • Review daily flaring profiles and develop practical measures to minimize avoidable flaring.
  • Assess proposed project packages, schedules and expenditure phasing from an operational perspective.
  • Identify plant improvement opportunities that can increase reliability, availability and cost efficiency.
  • Facilitate modifications required to improve equipment or process performance.
  • Conduct plant performance analysis and failure investigations in critical operating areas.
  • Support shift teams in resolving process issues affecting equipment availability or production continuity.
  • Advise Maintenance, Engineering and other departments on complex operational and environmental matters.
  • Participate as a subject matter expert in technical assessment and promotion panels.
  • Coordinate work activities across departments within assigned plant areas.
  • Support shift teams during emergencies in accordance with approved Emergency Response Procedures.
  • Assist with safe equipment isolation and restoration of normal plant conditions following abnormal events.
  • Monitor operating units to ensure equipment remains in suitable condition from both safety and performance perspectives.
  • Give particular attention to reducing emissions and minimizing unnecessary flaring.
  • Guide shift operations teams in implementation of ADNOC GAS HSEMS requirements.
  • Promote HSE awareness and reinforce safe work practices across operational teams.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable management systems and technical assurance tools including AIPS, HSECES, RCM, DGS and MOC requirements.
  • Verify that supporting documentation for management systems and assurance processes is complete and current.
  • Follow up identified shortcomings until satisfactory corrective actions are implemented.
  • Monitor effective use of the Connected Worker System.
  • Review field monitoring results and initiate corrective actions when abnormal conditions are identified.
  • Participate in personnel performance assessments and technical interviews.
  • Maintain detailed operational and technical shift records where required.
Ideal Profile

The successful candidate will hold a Bachelor 's degree in Chemical Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline. At least 8 years of experience within oil refining, gas processing or petrochemical operations is required, including a minimum of 3 years in a senior supervisory role.

Strong experience working with Distributed Control Systems is essential, together with detailed knowledge of plant operating procedures, standing instructions and operational control requirements. Candidates should have practical exposure to environmental monitoring, flaring and emissions management, process troubleshooting, effluent control and industrial waste management.

Experience leading or contributing to HAZOP, HAZID, Root Cause Analysis, SIL and risk assessment activities is highly valuable. The role requires proven analytical capability, sound decision-making and the ability to coordinate effectively with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, HSE and external technical specialists. Strong IT capability, clear communication skills and good command of written and spoken English are required.
