Role Context
The Operations Engineer provides technical and operational coordination between plant operations, maintenance, reliability, engineering, and support teams. The role focuses on keeping process units available, resolving recurring operating problems, improving plant efficiency, and ensuring maintenance and shutdown activities are prioritized around production requirements. A major part of the position involves reviewing plant performance, identifying operational risks, leading mitigation planning, and translating technical findings into practical actions. The engineer also supports process modifications, HAZOP studies, reliability improvement programs, maintenance management systems, and turnaround preparation while ensuring operations remain aligned with HSE and ADNOC requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate daily maintenance activities with Operations to minimize production disruption and improve plant availability.
- Establish work priorities based on operational risk, equipment condition, production requirements, and maintenance needs.
- Maintain accurate operational activity records within the maintenance management system.
- Ensure plant activities are properly captured for monitoring, reporting, and future analysis.
- Develop, review, and update operating procedures and standing instructions.
- Provide clear operational guidance to improve consistency and control across process units.
- Monitor daily plant technical performance and identify emerging operational constraints.
- Investigate deviations affecting production, reliability, efficiency, quality, or equipment availability.
- Recommend corrective actions to resolve plant operating issues.
- Develop practical procedures and action plans for recurring technical problems.
- Monitor overall plant reliability performance and identify areas requiring focused improvement.
- Participate in reliability improvement programs covering process units and critical equipment.
- Support problem identification and structured Root Cause Analysis for recurring operational failures.
- Review failure reports and recommend corrective and preventive measures.
- Develop action plans designed to improve plant safety and operational reliability.
- Participate in technical and operational risk assessments.
- Lead risk assessment sessions for assigned operational activities.
- Evaluate identified hazards and confirm appropriate mitigation measures are established.
- Follow up mitigation actions to ensure risks are reduced to acceptable levels.
- Provide operational input to plant modification proposals.
- Review project and modification requirements from an operations perspective.
- Participate in HAZOP reviews and other formal process safety studies.
- Review process flow diagrams, P and IDs, and related technical documentation for proposed improvements.
- Identify modifications that can improve plant operability, reliability, efficiency, or safety.
- Coordinate plant shutdown and turnaround activities with Operations, Maintenance, Planning, and other stakeholders.
- Support preparation of shutdown work scopes and operating requirements.
- Facilitate safe plant isolation, shutdown, maintenance execution, and return-to-service activities.
- Provide operational support during commissioning and startup where required.
- Ensure maintenance management system information is updated in a timely manner.
- Coordinate with maintenance personnel regarding outstanding work orders, priorities, and equipment constraints.
- Plan and supervise activities within the assigned operational area.
- Allocate responsibilities and monitor work execution against functional objectives.
- Train and develop assigned staff in plant operations, safety requirements, and technical practices.
- Support competency development of operations personnel.
- Provide input for preparation of functional budgets and operational work plans.
- Monitor expenditure and highlight significant budget or resource variances.
- Support effective cost control without compromising operational reliability or safety.
- Implement approved policies, systems, processes, standards, and procedures.
- Ensure plant work programs comply with company requirements and recognized international practices.
- Contribute to achievement of departmental performance objectives and KPIs.
- Design and implement tools or techniques that improve operational quality and efficiency.
- Benchmark internal processes against industry practices and identify improvement opportunities.
- Provide technical input for MIS reports, progress updates, performance dashboards, and management reporting.
- Coordinate frequently with Maintenance, Operations, Reliability, Gas Operations Support, and site services teams.
- Liaise with ADNOC operating companies on matters requiring operational coordination.
- Interface with third-party vendors, contractors, service providers, and product consumers where required.
- Ensure compliance with HSE policies, applicable legislation, sustainability guidelines, and ADNOC Code of Practices.
- Participate in Near Miss, incident, and accident reporting processes.
- Support safe work systems including work management, isolation, commissioning, startup, and maintenance activities.
Ideal Profile
The position requires a Bachelor 's degree in Production Engineering or an equivalent professional engineering qualification. Candidates should have at least 8 years of Plant Operations experience within the Oil and Gas industry. Strong knowledge of gas processing plant operations is required, including familiarity with process units, utility systems, production interfaces, and general plant layout. The successful candidate should understand operational troubleshooting, reliability improvement, maintenance coordination, shutdown planning, process safety, and equipment performance monitoring. Practical experience with HAZOP, risk assessment, Root Cause Analysis, Management of Change, commissioning, startup, and plant modification reviews will be highly valuable. Candidates should be comfortable working with a Computerized Maintenance Management System and using maintenance information to support operational planning and equipment availability. The role requires strong planning, organizing, scheduling, coordinating, checking, examining, and technical recording capabilities. Conceptual thinking and the ability to develop practical operational improvements are important for addressing complex plant issues. A strong understanding of HSE standards, procedures, operating discipline, and safe work practices is essential.
