Role Context

The Emergency Response Technician - Oil Spill supports operational readiness for oil spills, hazardous material incidents and related environmental emergencies. Working under established emergency response plans and supervisory direction, the technician prepares, checks and deploys specialist pollution-control equipment while following approved procedures and safe operating practices. The position plays a practical role in containing environmental incidents before they accelerate. Reliable equipment preparation, correct deployment techniques and disciplined adherence to response procedures help protect personnel, surrounding environments, operating facilities and business continuity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement operational instructions associated with Oil Spill Response and Hazmat emergency response plans.
  • Support rapid mobilization during pollution incidents and environmental emergencies.
  • Deploy anti-pollution equipment according to incident requirements and supervisor instructions.
  • Assist with positioning containment and recovery equipment at affected locations.
  • Operate oil dispersant spraying equipment when instructed and authorized.
  • Handle approved oil spill response chemicals in accordance with operating and HSE requirements.
  • Select suitable spill response equipment based on the type and scale of the incident.
  • Prepare equipment for deployment before emergency response activities begin.
  • Conduct pre-operational checks using manufacturer specifications and approved Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Identify visible equipment defects or readiness concerns before deployment.
  • Report damaged, unavailable or malfunctioning response equipment to the responsible supervisor.
  • Ensure emergency equipment is returned to an operationally ready condition following use.
  • Follow approved Oil Spill Response procedures throughout mobilization, deployment and recovery activities.
  • Support Hazmat response activities within the limits of assigned responsibilities and training.
  • Apply site waste management procedures during emergency and routine environmental activities.
  • Segregate and handle collected waste according to approved environmental requirements.
  • Support appropriate management of contaminated materials generated during spill response operations.
  • Follow supervisor instructions during emergency response deployment.
  • Maintain awareness of changing site conditions during incident response.
  • Use required personal protective equipment during oil spill and Hazmat activities.
  • Follow safe chemical handling practices when working with dispersants and related materials.
  • Maintain clean and organized emergency response equipment areas.
  • Assist with routine inspection and readiness checks of pollution-control resources.
  • Participate in emergency response drills and preparedness exercises where assigned.
  • Support testing of equipment used for containment, recovery and pollution mitigation.
  • Follow applicable environmental protection procedures during all response activities.
  • Maintain compliance with company HSE requirements and established work practices.
  • Record equipment checks and operational activities where required.
  • Report unsafe conditions or environmental risks identified during routine or emergency work.
  • Cooperate with emergency response teams and site personnel during incident management.
  • Support continuous readiness by keeping assigned equipment available for immediate deployment.
Ideal Profile

The successful candidate will hold a Secondary School Certificate together with a vocational trade certificate in a relevant field. Candidates may have between 0 and 3 years of experience in crisis response, emergency services, environmental response or a related operational field. Previous exposure to oil and gas, industrial emergency response, hazardous materials or pollution-control activities will be advantageous but is not essential for suitable entry-level applicants. The role requires a disciplined approach to following Standard Operating Procedures, supervisor instructions and safety requirements. Candidates should be comfortable working with emergency equipment, environmental response materials and basic pollution-control systems. Practical awareness of oil spill containment, Hazmat precautions, chemical handling and waste management will support development in the position.
