Overview
Consultant Breast Surgeon responsible for diagnosing, treating and managing patients with benign and malignant breast diseases, performing breast‑conserving and mastectomy surgeries, conducting sentinel lymph node biopsies, and providing comprehensive post‑operative care and survivorship follow‑up.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Assess, diagnose and manage patients with benign and malignant breast diseases
- Perform comprehensive breast examinations and clinical assessments
- Evaluate patients presenting with breast lumps, nipple discharge, breast pain, skin changes and abnormal breast imaging findings
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on clinical guidelines and multidisciplinary recommendations
- Perform breast‑conserving surgery (lumpectomy, wide local excision)
- Perform mastectomy procedures, including skin‑sparing and nipple‑sparing techniques where appropriate
- Perform sentinel lymph node biopsy and axillary lymph node dissection
- Perform excision of benign breast lesions and other breast surgical procedures
- Coordinate reconstructive surgery with Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons when indicated
- Manage breast emergencies, postoperative complications and surgical follow‑up
- Participate in breast cancer screening and early detection programs
- Provide survivorship and long‑term follow‑up care
Diagnostic Responsibilities
- Interpret mammography, breast ultrasound, MRI and other breast imaging studies in collaboration with Radiology
- Correlate imaging findings with clinical examination and pathology
- Review biopsy and histopathology reports
- Recommend further diagnostic investigations where clinically indicated
- Participate in multidisciplinary breast meetings and Tumor Board
Patient Care Responsibilities
- Counsel patients regarding diagnosis, treatment options, risks, benefits and expected outcomes
- Obtain informed consent before surgical procedures
- Provide compassionate support for patients diagnosed with breast cancer
- Educate patients on postoperative care, recovery, surveillance and lifestyle modifications
- Maintain patient confidentiality and ethical medical practice
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
- Participate in departmental meetings, quality initiatives and clinical governance activities
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies and DHA, DOH, MOHAP regulations
- Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings, audits and quality improvement programs
Academic Responsibilities
- Supervise and mentor junior physicians, residents and medical students
- Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME, CPD)
- Contribute to research activities, publications and clinical audits
- Participate in departmental teaching sessions and conferences
Quality & Safety Responsibilities
- Deliver evidence‑based surgical care in accordance with international and UAE clinical guidelines
- Adhere to infection prevention and control policies
- Promote patient safety and risk management practices
- Maintain high standards of clinical governance and quality assurance
Qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent medical degree recognized in the UAE
- Master's degree (MS), MD, FRCS, Arab Board, European Board, American Board, or equivalent qualification in General Surgery
- Fellowship or advanced subspecialty training in Breast Surgery, Surgical Oncology, or Oncoplastic Breast Surgery (preferred)
Experience
- 3–5 years of post‑qualification experience as a Consultant Breast Surgeon (subject to UAE licensing authority requirements)
- Extensive experience in breast cancer surgery and benign breast disease management
- Experience in breast‑conserving surgery, mastectomy, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and oncoplastic procedures
- Experience working within a multidisciplinary breast care team
Licensing
- Valid DHA, DOH or MOHAP Consultant license, or eligibility to obtain one
- Compliance with UAE Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR)
