Role Context

The Consultant - ENT and Head Neck Surgery will provide comprehensive outpatient, inpatient, elective, and emergency care across the full spectrum of otolaryngology. The role has a strong clinical focus on head and neck surgery, complex airway disorders, reconstructive procedures, oncological care, and multidisciplinary treatment planning. The consultant will manage difficult airway cases, perform advanced surgical procedures, supervise junior clinicians, and collaborate closely with anesthesiology, oncology, radiology, pulmonology, critical care, speech therapy, and allied healthcare teams. The position also contributes to strategic service growth, protocol development, clinical quality, and patient safety.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess and manage adult and pediatric patients with ear, nose, throat, head, neck, and airway disorders.
• Conduct detailed outpatient consultations, diagnostic assessments, and follow-up reviews.
• Diagnose and treat acute, chronic, benign, malignant, congenital, and traumatic ENT conditions.
• Perform advanced head and neck surgery involving the thyroid, parathyroid, salivary glands, neck masses, and regional lymph nodes.
• Undertake oncological procedures for malignant tumors affecting the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, salivary glands, thyroid, and neck.
• Evaluate complex airway conditions and develop individualized surgical or medical treatment plans.
• Lead difficult airway management in collaboration with anesthesiology, intensive care, and emergency medicine teams.
• Perform tracheostomy procedures and provide specialist tracheostomy care.
• Conduct airway reconstruction for stenosis, structural abnormalities, and complex laryngotracheal conditions.
• Perform endoscopic airway assessment and therapeutic interventions.
• Manage emergency airway obstruction and provide rapid stabilization when required.
• Treat severe epistaxis using appropriate medical, endoscopic, or surgical techniques.
• Manage ENT trauma involving the airway, face, neck, ear, nose, and related structures.
• Perform endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic and complex sinonasal disease.
• Conduct otologic procedures for middle ear, mastoid, hearing, and related disorders.
• Perform laryngeal surgery for voice, swallowing, airway, and oncological conditions.
• Provide preoperative assessment, risk evaluation, patient counselling, and informed consent.
• Coordinate perioperative care with anesthesiologists, nurses, theatre teams, and relevant specialists.
• Monitor postoperative recovery and manage surgical complications, airway concerns, wounds, infections, and functional outcomes.
• Participate in head and neck tumor boards and multidisciplinary oncology meetings.
• Contribute to airway management committees and complex clinical case reviews.
• Collaborate with radiologists, oncologists, pulmonologists, intensivists, pathologists, and rehabilitation specialists.
• Develop integrated treatment plans covering surgery, oncology, airway care, swallowing, speech, and rehabilitation.
• Maintain accurate consultation records, operative reports, consent documentation, discharge summaries, and follow-up plans.
• Ensure compliance with DHA regulations, hospital policies, professional standards, and ethical requirements.
• Participate in clinical governance, morbidity reviews, patient safety programs, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Develop and update clinical pathways, surgical protocols, referral criteria, and emergency response procedures.
• Support strategic planning and expansion of ENT, head and neck, and airway services.
• Teach and supervise residents, fellows, junior physicians, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
• Participate in research, publications, presentations, and continuing professional development.
• Maintain current knowledge of advances in airway surgery, head and neck oncology, endoscopic techniques, and reconstructive care.
• Uphold infection control, confidentiality, patient safety, and evidence-based clinical practice.

Ideal Profile

• MBBS, MD, or an equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
• Completion of accredited residency training in Otolaryngology or ENT.
• Fellowship or advanced subspecialty training in Head and Neck Surgery, Airway Surgery, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Western board certification such as UK CCT, American Board, Canadian FRCSC, Australian or New Zealand Fellowship, or an equivalent recognized qualification.
• Eligibility for DHA Consultant licensing.
• Minimum 8 years of post-specialty qualification experience or experience meeting current DHA consultant criteria.
• Proven expertise in complex airway management, airway reconstruction, and difficult airway cases.
• Extensive experience in head and neck surgical oncology.
• Strong procedural background in thyroid, parathyroid, salivary gland, neck mass, and oncological surgery.
• Competence in endoscopic sinus surgery, otologic surgery, laryngeal procedures, and emergency ENT care.
• Experience managing both adult and pediatric ENT patients.
• Previous work in a tertiary care hospital or high-volume ENT and head and neck centre is advantageous.
• Strong clinical judgment and evidence-based surgical decision-making.
• Ability to lead multidisciplinary discussions and coordinate complex treatment pathways.
