About the School

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences offers undergraduate programmes in Media and Communication as well as Psychological Science and staffs the General Education requirements for all undergraduates across UOWD, from the School of Business to the Schools of Engineering and Computer Science.

The General Education programme currently offers options in English/Research Methods (HUM040), Islamic Studies and UAE Studies, following the last revision made to the General Education by the Ministry of Education in 2019. The UAE Studies category of the General Education follows a broad interdisciplinary approach to topics that are of strategic interest to the UAE. Thus, for example, there are modules on the environment, international relations, urban sociology and public health:

  • IRAE135 International Relations and the UAE
  • URBS103 Urban Sociology (soon to be revamped as Cities of the Middle East) (a subject using traditional sociological concepts examined against a range of Middle Eastern cities)
  • HUM040 Literacy in a Digital Age: Global Themes Edition (essentially a research methods class for foundation students)
  • HUM030 The Art of Understanding: Culture, Communication & Creativity (a culture studies subject)

The purpose of these modules is to instruct students in some of the most pressing issues facing the global community today, anchored in a Middle East studies perspective, opening up comparative approaches to the UAE’s development agenda, while developing students’ soft skills. The General Education programme is primarily concerned with instilling in students critical thinking skills and enhancing their empathy, emotional intelligence and communication skills. If you are trained in the Humanities and Social Sciences (History, Politics, Middle East Studies, Languages, English, Sociology, Anthropology), we would be interested in your candidature.

Requirements & Responsibilities

The School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Health and the Media department is currently seeking a qualified and motivated instructor for its General Education programme to join us in January 2026.

Candidates are expected to have an approach to teaching that is student‑centred, with a focus on designing subjects that have multiple assessment approaches, formative and summative, and activity‑based learning. UOWD follows a lecture (2hrs) + tutorial (2hrs) structure to modules, so that each student has 4hrs of classroom contact per subject per week. The lecture component centres around the delivery of content, while the tutorial is activity‑based to engage students in the subject‑matter for that week.

Core responsibilities
  • Delivery of lecture and/or tutorial components (depending on qualification level) of one of the above subjects
  • Offer consultation times to students outside of classroom hours
  • Liaise with subject coordinator before, during and at the end of the semester session
  • Complete grading of student work in a timely fashion, using clear rubrics, and with constructive feedback
  • Input the grades into the student interface software (SMP) and complete subject report for the end of semester (training will be provided)
Qualifications & Experience

A minimum of a Master’s degree in a relevant field of the Humanities and Social Sciences (Sociology, Anthropology, Urban Studies, International Relations, Islamic Studies).

The successful candidate will enjoy interaction with a professional dynamic team of highly respected educators from more than 30 different countries and exposure to students from over 100 nationalities.

The University offers adjunct tutors at undergraduate level a compensation of AED 6000/- per semester for a tutorial and AED 9000/- for the lecture component (i.e., one lecture and one tutorial will pay 15,000 AED; 1 lecture + 2 tutorials, 21,000 AED). This covers teaching, grading and proving subject consultation for students. The University is located in Knowledge Village, Dubai and has excellent teaching, learning and research facilities as well as a library that meets international standards.

UOWD is an equal opportunity employer that attracts, develops, motivates, empowers, and retains a diverse workforce.
