Qualifications

Job description

Our client is seeking a Mine Manager (Narrow Vein Operations) who will be responsible for planning, directing, and controlling all mining operations to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective extraction of minerals in compliance with statutory regulations, environmental standards, and company policies. The Mine Manager is a legally appointed senior manager responsible for ensuring that the mine is operated in accordance with all applicable statutory requirements and the responsibilities contained in the incumbent’s Letter of Appointment. The incumbent is responsible for the overall management and coordination of mining operations, ensuring appropriate systems, procedures, standards and controls are implemented to achieve safe and sustainable production.

Responsibilities:
  • Ensure production targets are achieved safely and sustainably in line with approved mine plans, legislation and COPs.
  • Monitor production performance, identify constraints, implement corrective actions and maintain accurate production forecasting.
  • Develop and implement short-, medium- and long-term mine plans and evaluate alternative mining methods and technologies.
  • Ensure compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act, including risk assessments, incident investigations and corrective actions.
  • Manage operational expenditure, monitor cost per tonne and implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising safety or production.
  • Optimize equipment, labor and resources while identifying opportunities for operational improvement.
  • Develop a motivated and performance-driven management team through effective training, coaching and mentoring.
  • Maintain effective stakeholder relationships, implement the mine's operational strategy, promote sustainable mining and support Employment Equity, B-BBEE / transformation and succession planning.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering – mandatory, with Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency / First Class Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency, where legally applicable, and registration with the relevant professional body where applicable.
  • 8–15 years’ relevant mining experience, including the minimum statutory experience required for appointment as Mine Manager and demonstrated experience in a mine management or senior mining leadership position.
  • Proven experience in managing mining production, safety, people and operational costs, with experience in the relevant commodity and mining method preferred.
  • Sound knowledge of applicable mining legislation, regulations and statutory requirements, including Mine Health and Safety systems, risk management and accident prevention.
  • Experience in mine planning, production scheduling and operational optimization, including familiarity with mine planning, production and reporting software.
  • Experience in budgeting, financial management, cost control, contractor management and stakeholder engagement, with the ability to interpret technical and operational information.
  • Strong leadership, decision-making, communication, problem-solving, analytical, conflict management and negotiation skills, with strong team management and workforce engagement capability.
  • Strategic and operational planning skills, with change management and continuous improvement capability, and the ability to work effectively under pressure and within strict statutory and production requirements; additional management, business, leadership or project management qualifications will be advantageous.
