Placements24 is seeking a Substation Technician to join the Randburg team. The role focuses on safe operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical substations to ensure reliability of power delivery in the grid.

You will perform inspections, diagnostics, and preventive maintenance on HV equipment and protection systems, with responsibilities including after-hours call-outs and strict adherence to safety protocols. A suitable N3 qualification and 4+ years of experience are required.

Qualifications

• N3 or equivalent qualification in electrical engineering.
• Minimum of 4 years hands-on experience as a Substation Technician or similar in the electricity utility sector.
• Strong knowledge of high-voltage equipment operation, maintenance, and testing principles.
• Proficiency with specialized tools and diagnostic equipment for substation maintenance.
• Understanding of protection schemes and control systems is highly desirable.
• Ability to work independently, solve problems, and respond to after-hours call-outs in Randburg.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine inspections, testing, and maintenance of substation equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, relays, and switchgear.
• Diagnose and repair electrical and mechanical faults within substation environments, minimizing power supply disruption.
• Install, commission, and modify substation components and control/protection systems.
• Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to execute tasks accurately.
• Adhere to safety procedures including lockout/tagout, working at heights, and confined space entry.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, test results, and equipment status using the asset management system.
