Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Develop detailed substation designs including single-line diagrams and layouts.
• Specify transformers, switchgear, breakers, and busbars.
• Perform load calculations, short-circuit analysis and protection design.
• Ensure designs meet SANS, IEC standards and client specifications.
• Coordinate with civil, mechanical and procurement teams; support site verification.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly skilled Substation Design Engineer to join their expanding engineering team, contributing to vital projects in the energy sector within Durban . This role is integral to designing and optimizing electrical substations, ensuring the efficient and secure transmission and distribution of power across the region. You will work on challenging projects that are crucial to the infrastructure development of KwaZulu-Natal , collaborating with a team of experts dedicated to advancing energy solutions and maintaining high standards of safety and performance in a demanding industrial environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop detailed engineering designs for electrical substations, including single-line diagrams, physical layouts, and schematics.
• Specify and select power system components such as transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, and busbars.
• Perform load calculations , short-circuit analysis, and protection system design for substations.
• Ensure designs comply with industry standards (e.g., SANS, IEC) and client specifications.
• Coordinate with civil, mechanical, and procurement teams throughout the project lifecycle.
• Conduct site visits for design verification and support construction and commissioning activities.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• A minimum of 6 years of experience in the design of electrical substations.
• Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical) and substation design tools.
• Strong understanding of power system protection principles and equipment.
• Experience with grounding system design and lightning protection.
• Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
