Qualifications

About the Role

Our client, a reputable provider of solar energy solutions, is seeking a talented and detail-oriented Solar PV System Designer to join their growing team. This hybrid role, based in Soweto, Gauteng , will be responsible for the technical design of solar photovoltaic systems for residential, commercial, and industrial clients. You will work closely with sales, project management, and installation teams to ensure designs are efficient, compliant with regulations, and meet client needs. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in electrical engineering, proficiency with design software, and a passion for renewable energy. Key Responsibilities

• Design and engineer solar PV systems, including rooftop and ground-mount installations, for various client segments.
• Produce detailed system designs, single-line diagrams, and electrical schematics.
• Perform system sizing, component selection (panels, inverters, mounting structures, batteries), and energy yield calculations.
• Ensure all designs comply with relevant national electrical codes, SANS standards, and municipal regulations in Gauteng .
• Prepare technical documentation, including system specifications and Bill of Materials (BOM).
• Collaborate with the sales team to provide technical support during the proposal and quotation phase.
• Work with project managers and installers to ensure smooth project execution and address technical queries.
• Conduct site assessments (where necessary) to gather information for accurate system design.
• Stay updated on the latest solar technologies, products, and industry best practices.
• Troubleshoot and resolve design-related issues during installation and commissioning phases.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and standards.
• Ensure optimal system performance and safety in all designs.

Requirements

• National Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in designing solar PV systems.
• Proficiency with solar design software (e.g., PVSyst, AutoCAD, Helioscope, or similar).
• Strong understanding of electrical principles, power systems, and solar PV technology.
• Knowledge of relevant South African electrical regulations, SANS standards, and NRS specifications.
• Familiarity with grid-tied, hybrid, and off-grid solar PV system configurations.
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in design work.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with internal teams and potentially clients.
• Ability to manage multiple design projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
• Experience with battery storage system design is an advantage.
• Valid driver's license is beneficial.
