Job summary

Valterra Platinum is seeking a Band 6 Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene specialist based in Mokopane, Limpopo. You will lead ventilation and occupational hygiene functions, ensure legal compliance, and drive improvements across the shaft-level operation.

The role requires five years’ post-qualification mine ventilation experience, MHSA knowledge, and proficiency with VUMA, VentSim, Deswik, MS Office and SAP. A strong safety culture and collaboration with mine teams are essential.

Qualifications

• Minimum five years post-qualification experience in mine ventilation.
• Experience acting as an MHSA Section 12.1 appointee.
• Experience in a massive mechanised mining environment at sectional or senior ventilation officer level.
• MHSA, ventilation, occupational hygiene and environmental control regulations.
• MS Office and SAP proficiency.
• Ventilation design software such as VUMA, VentSim, Deswik and MicroStation.

Responsibilities

• Ensure all occupational hygiene monitoring functions and audits follow MHSA requirements.
• Establish systems for disciplined compliance and routine ventilation inspections.
• Develop ventilation capability and transfer knowledge to lamp room, control room and mining teams.
• Support training in ventilation and occupational hygiene.
• Maintain shaft-level standards, procedures and best practices.
• Ensure adherence to legal requirements and audit processes.
• Coordinate shaft-level ventilation and hygiene programmes as directed by the Chief Ventilation Engineer.
• Set daily/weekly/monthly ventilation and hygiene targets.
• Plan short-term ventilation and hygiene activities.
• Interpret and act on related legislation and update plans accordingly.
• Provide expert input during challenges to minimize unsafe practices.
• Report to the employer as the MHSA-competent person on findings and trends.
• Define training needs and supervise staff within procedures.
