Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Senior Substation Engineer in Upington, Northern Cape to lead HV substation design and project execution for energy transmission networks. You will guide layouts, equipment specs, grounding, and protection schemes, while coordinating with multidisciplinary teams.

The role requires 8+ years in substation design and strong knowledge of grid codes, safety standards, and power system analysis. You will mentor junior engineers and support site activities across projects in SA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Power Systems.
• A minimum of 8 years of experience in substation design and project engineering.
• Proven experience in designing substation components and protection systems.
• Proficiency in substation design software and power system analysis tools.
• Strong understanding of grid codes, utility requirements, and safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical design and engineering of high-voltage substations (up to 400 kV).
• Develop detailed designs for substation layouts and equipment specs (transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, busbars).
• Perform power system studies: load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination.
• Ensure designs comply with standards (SANS, IEC, IEEE) and client specs.
• Manage project execution: contractor oversight, construction support, commissioning.
