Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Senior Shaft Services Engineer for an on-site role in Centurion, Gauteng. You will lead the design, installation, and commissioning of underground shaft systems and manage comprehensive maintenance programs for hoists, cages, and related equipment.

You will drive safety, reliability and efficiency through strong project management, mentoring, and collaboration with planning, operations and safety teams in a major mining operation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mining Engineering.
• 8+ years of shaft engineering and services experience in the Mining industry.
• Proven experience with design, operation and maintenance of mine hoisting systems (e.g., friction/ drum hoists).
• Familiarity with shaft sinking procedures, rope maintenance, and ground support for shafts.
• Knowledge of mining regulations and safety standards (Mine Health and Safety Act).
• Excellent project management, leadership and team coordination.
• Proficiency in relevant engineering software and diagnostic tools.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Effective communication and reporting skills.

Responsibilities

• Oversee design, installation, and commissioning of shaft systems and upgrades.
• Develop and manage maintenance programs for shaft equipment (hoists, skips, cages, conveyances, ropes, etc.).
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations for underground shaft operations.
• Conduct inspections and audits of shaft infrastructure and equipment.
• Troubleshoot shaft system issues and manage budgets.
• Collaborate with mine planning, operations, and safety to coordinate shaft activities.
• Prepare technical reports, specifications and project documentation.
• Manage contracts with external service providers and suppliers.
• Mentor and supervise junior engineers, technicians and shaft crew.
• Stay updated on shaft engineering tech and best practices.
• Contribute to preventative maintenance strategies.
