Placements24, on behalf of a major mining and resources client, seeks a Senior Regulatory Compliance Lawyer to lead regulatory strategies in South Africa. The role emphasizes risk-based approaches, policy development, and proactive regulatory engagement.

Based near Klerksdorp, the position is remote-capable with significant autonomy to engage regulators, develop robust compliance programs, and drive governance across operations and projects.

Qualifications

• Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
• Minimum 9 years post-qualification experience in regulatory compliance, preferably mining.
• In-depth knowledge of SA mining law, environmental legislation, and OHS regulations.
• Proven experience developing and implementing compliance programs.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.

Responsibilities

• Oversee compliance with mining, environmental, health and safety regulations.
• Interpret legislation and advise senior management and operations teams.
• Develop, implement, and maintain robust compliance policies and training.
• Monitor regulatory changes and assess impact on the business.
• Represent the company with regulators, permits, inspections and actions.
• Conduct internal investigations and audits to ensure compliance.
• Advise on permitting, licensing, and reporting across jurisdictions.
• Manage external counsel and consultants in regulatory matters.
• Contribute to CSR and sustainability initiatives from a legal perspective.
