Placements24 is seeking a Senior Mine Operations Superintendent to oversee East London mining operations. You will lead a large workforce, drive safety excellence, manage production targets, and coordinate with planning, maintenance, and technical services to deliver efficient, compliant operations.

The role requires a strong background in both open-pit and underground mining, with a proven track record in supervising teams and delivering results in a demanding environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or related field.
• 10+ years in mine operations management with at least 5 years in supervision.
• Proven track record of leading large teams and achieving targets.
• In-depth knowledge of open-pit and/or underground mining methods and equipment.
• Strong safety and environmental compliance expertise.
• Excellent leadership and communication skills.
• Proficiency with mine operations planning software.
• Willingness to work onsite in East London, Eastern Cape.

About the Role

Our client, a significant operator in the mining industry , is seeking a highly capable and experienced Senior Mine Operations Superintendent to oversee their operations in East London, Eastern Cape . This key leadership role is responsible for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective execution of all mining activities, including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, and in-situ processing. You will lead and manage a large operational workforce, ensuring adherence to production targets, safety protocols, and environmental standards. The ideal candidate possesses a strong background in mine management, exceptional leadership qualities, and a deep understanding of operational best practices in both open-pit and/or underground mining environments. Key Responsibilities

• Direct and manage all aspects of mine operations, ensuring alignment with production targets, budgets, and strategic goals.
• Develop, implement, and enforce comprehensive safety management systems and procedures to ensure a zero-harm workplace.
• Lead, mentor, and develop a diverse team of mine supervisors, foremen, and operational personnel.
• Optimize operational performance through effective resource allocation, process improvements, and technological integration.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant mining legislation, environmental regulations, and company policies.
• Manage operational costs effectively, identifying opportunities for efficiency gains and waste reduction.
• Collaborate closely with mine planning, maintenance, and technical services departments to ensure seamless operations.
• Oversee the efficient use and maintenance of mobile mining fleet and equipment.
• Conduct regular site inspections and performance reviews to monitor progress and identify areas for improvement.
• Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the operations team.
• Report on operational performance to senior management, including production statistics, safety incidents, and cost analysis.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or a related technical discipline.
• A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in mine operations management, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or superintendent role, preferably in the mining industry .
• Proven track record of successfully managing large operational teams and achieving production targets.
• In-depth knowledge of open-pit and/or underground mining methods, equipment, and associated technologies.
• Strong understanding of mine safety legislation and environmental best practices in South Africa .
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to drive change and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
• Proficiency in mine operations planning and management software.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a demanding, fast-paced operational environment, including regular site presence.
• Experience in the Eastern Cape region is a plus.
