Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to support mining operations with remote data analysis and design of ground support systems for underground and open-pit mines. The role includes modeling to assess ground conditions and mitigating hazards, with periodic site visits to Bloemfontein and other sites.

The ideal candidate holds a Master’s or PhD in geotechnical or civil engineering, with 8+ years mining experience, and proficiency in FLAC, RocScience, and Slope/W to communicate

• Perform stability analyses for slopes, excavations, and underground openings using specialized software.
• Design and recommend appropriate ground support systems and dewatering strategies.
• Develop and implement geotechnical monitoring programs to assess risks and ensure stability.
• Prepare comprehensive geotechnical reports, risk assessments, and design documentation.

About the Role

Our client is seeking an accomplished Senior Geotechnical Engineer to contribute to the safety and stability of their mining operations. This role will focus heavily on remote analysis of geological and geotechnical data, coupled with the design of safe and efficient support systems for both underground and open-pit mines. You will leverage advanced modeling software to assess ground conditions, predict potential hazards, and develop mitigation strategies. While a significant portion of the work will be performed remotely, periodic site visits to Bloemfontein and other operational areas will be necessary for direct observation, data validation, and collaboration with site personnel. This is a crucial role ensuring the long-term integrity of our mining infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Requirements

• Master's degree or PhD in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.

• Proficiency in geotechnical analysis and modeling software (e.g., FLAC, Rocscience suite, Slope/W).
• Strong understanding of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and hydrogeology.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and report writing skills.
