Placements24 is seeking a Senior Bioinformatician to advance genomic data analysis in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. The role focuses on designing and implementing analytical pipelines for NGS data and collaborating with biologists to interpret complex results.

The candidate should hold a PhD or MSc with 5+ years in bioinformatics, proficiency in Python/R/shell, and experience with BLAST, Ensembl, UCSC Genome Browser, and Galaxy. Cloud familiarity is a plus.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.
• Minimum 5 years of post-degree experience in bioinformatics with a genomics focus.
• Proficiency in Python, R, and shell scripting.
• Hands-on experience with NGS data analysis workflows and related software.
• Strong statistical understanding and ability to apply methods to biological data.

Responsibilities

• Develop, validate, and maintain robust bioinformatics pipelines for NGS data (WGS, RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq).
• Analyze genomic and transcriptomic data, including variant calling and expression profiling.
• Collaborate with experimental biologists to define strategies and interpret results.
• Design statistical models to identify patterns or biomarkers.
• Contribute to new algorithms and computational tools for research questions.
• Manage and curate large genomic datasets, ensuring data integrity.
• Prepare reports, presentations, and manuscripts for publication.
• Stay updated on advancements in bioinformatics and genomics.
