Placements24 is seeking a highly motivated Remote Underwriting Manager to lead a fully remote underwriting team across South Africa. You will oversee the underwriting process for a diverse insurance portfolio, drive profitability, and ensure compliance with risk appetite while enabling a remote-first culture.

The ideal candidate has a business/finance degree, 7+ years in underwriting with 3+ in leadership, strong analytics, pricing expertise, and proficiency with underwriting software and CRM

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field.
• 7+ years in insurance underwriting with 3+ years in leadership.
• Proven success leading remote teams.
• Deep knowledge of underwriting principles, risk assessment and pricing.
• Strong understanding of SA insurance market and regulations.
• Excellent analytical, strategic thinking and decision-making.
• Exceptional communication, interpersonal and leadership abilities.
• Proficiency with underwriting software, CRM and data tools.
• Track record of driving performance in a remote setting.
• Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and manage a remote team of underwriters.
• Develop and implement underwriting guidelines and strategies.
• Oversee assessment and pricing of complex risks across product lines.
• Ensure regulatory compliance and adherence to policies.
• Monitor performance metrics, identify trends, and take corrective actions.
• Collaborate with sales, claims and product teams to identify opportunities.
• Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing coaching.
• Champion adoption of technology and data analytics to improve efficiency.
• Manage broker and partner relationships with underwriting support.
• Contribute to product development and refinement.
