Placements24 in South Africa is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to lead mining analytics on a remote basis. You will develop advanced models using diverse data sources to predict maintenance needs, optimize operations, and improve safety.

The role combines cutting-edge tooling with cross-functional collaboration across engineering, geology, and operations. A PhD or MSc plus 7+ years of experience, proficiency in Python/R, SQL, and ML frameworks, and cloud platforms is required.

Qualifications

• Master's or PhD in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field.
• Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in data science or machine learning.
• Strong proficiency in Python or R, and SQL.
• Expertise in ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit‑learn) and big data/cloud platforms.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement machine learning models for predictive maintenance, process optimization, and resource forecasting.
• Analyze large, complex datasets from sensors, geological surveys, and production logs.
• Design and execute A/B tests and experiments to validate hypotheses and measure impact.
• Collaborate with engineers, geologists, and operations teams to identify business problems for data science solutions.
• Communicate complex findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Mentor junior data scientists and contribute to the team's technical roadmap.
