Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Process Safety Engineer to join our client’s Richards Bay operations in KwaZulu-Natal. This on-site role focuses on process safety management, hazard identification, risk assessment and robust safety systems to protect people, assets and the environment.

You will lead PSM programs, conduct PHAs (HAZOP/HAZID/LOPA), perform investigations and deliver safety training while ensuring regulatory compliance and continuous safety improvements across facilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
• Minimum of 5 years of process safety engineering experience in oil/gas or chemical industries.
• Strong knowledge of PSM standards (OSHA PSM, Seveso).
• Experience with PHAs and risk assessments, SIS and emergency relief systems.
• Excellent analytical and investigative skills; stakeholder communication.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement and manage Process Safety Management programs.

About the Role

This is a critical on-site role focused on ensuring the highest standards of safety in all process operations within our facilities. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of process safety management principles, hazard identification, risk assessment, and the implementation of robust safety systems. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and manage Process Safety Management (PSM) programs.
• Conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) such as HAZOP, HAZID, and LOPA studies.

• Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations, industry standards, and company policies.
• Develop and deliver process safety training to operational personnel.
• Review management of change (MOC) requests to ensure process safety implications are addressed.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in process safety engineering within the oil and gas or chemical industries.
• Strong knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM) standards (e.g., OSHA PSM, Seveso Directive).
• Experience in conducting various types of PHAs and risk assessments.
• Familiarity with safety instrumented systems (SIS) and emergency relief systems.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and investigative skills.
• Strong understanding of relevant South African and international safety regulations.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders.
• Proficiency in relevant software for risk assessment and incident management.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a demanding operational environment.
