Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
• Min 6 years in process safety in oil & gas.
• Strong knowledge of PSM elements (OSHA PSM, EPA RMP).
• Experience with HAZOP, LOPA, SIL, and QRA.
• Familiar with API/NFPA codes.
• Excellent analytical and communication skills.
• CSP certification desirable.
• Ability to work under pressure and manage priorities.

About the Role

Our client, a leading international energy company, is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Process Safety Engineer to ensure the highest standards of safety across its oil and gas facilities in the Cape Town, Western Cape . This critical role focuses on identifying, assessing, and mitigating process-related hazards to prevent incidents and ensure operational integrity. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of process safety management (PSM) principles, hazard identification techniques (HAZOP, LOPA), risk assessment methodologies, and regulatory compliance. Key Responsibilities

• Lead and participate in Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), including HAZOP, LOPA, and What-If studies.
• Develop and maintain Process Safety Management (PSM) systems and procedures.
• Conduct safety audits and inspections of oil and gas facilities to ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
• Assess risks associated with chemical processes, equipment, and operational procedures.
• Develop and implement safety recommendations and action plans to mitigate identified risks.
• Investigate incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
• Provide training and guidance to operational personnel on process safety best practices.
• Review management of change (MOC) processes to ensure safety implications are addressed.
• Stay current with industry best practices, regulations, and emerging trends in process safety.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to promote a proactive safety culture in Cape Town .

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• A minimum of 6 years of experience in process safety, engineering, or operations within the oil and gas industry.
• In-depth knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM) elements (e.g., OSHA PSM, EPA RMP).
• Proven experience with HAZOP, LOPA, SIL determination, and quantitative risk assessment (QRA).
• Familiarity with relevant industry codes and standards (e.g., API, NFPA).
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and report-writing abilities.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
• Professional certifications in Process Safety (e.g., CSP) are highly desirable.
