About the Role

Our client, a global leader in renewable energy project development, is searching for a highly accomplished Principal Electrical Design Engineer to contribute to their expanding operations, based remotely but with primary engagement focused on projects in the Durban region. This senior position is essential for leading the electrical design aspects of utility-scale solar and wind power projects from conception through to execution. You will be responsible for ensuring the technical viability, efficiency, and compliance of all electrical infrastructure. The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in grid-connected renewable energy systems, deep knowledge of international electrical standards, and a proven ability to manage complex design challenges. Your expertise will be critical in driving the successful delivery of high-impact renewable energy projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical design of large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy projects.
• Develop detailed electrical system designs, including single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, and equipment specifications.
• Perform electrical calculations and simulations for power systems, protection, earthing, and lightning protection.
• Ensure designs adhere to international standards (IEC, IEEE) and local South African regulations.
• Manage and review electrical design packages from internal teams and external consultants.
• Provide technical guidance and support throughout the project lifecycle, including construction and commissioning phases.
• Collaborate closely with project development, engineering, procurement, and construction teams.
• Identify and mitigate technical risks associated with electrical designs.

Requirements

• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Over 12 years of specialized experience in the electrical design of renewable energy projects (solar, wind).
• Expertise in AC/DC systems, grid interconnection, power quality, and protection studies for renewable power plants.
• Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical) and electrical simulation tools.
• Strong understanding of substation design and equipment (transformers, switchgear, cables).
• Experience managing design teams and external engineering partners.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences, including stakeholders associated with Durban projects.
• P.Eng registration preferred.
