About the Role Our client, a leading firm in the renewable energy sector, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Electrical Design Engineer to contribute to the design and development of large-scale solar and wind projects. Based in the bustling hub of Sandton, Gauteng, this role is central to translating project requirements into robust and efficient electrical designs. You will be responsible for all aspects of electrical system design, from concept to detailed engineering, ensuring compliance with industry standards and client specifications. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in renewable energy electrical design, including PV systems, wind turbines, and grid interconnection. This hybrid role allows for effective collaboration in our Sandton office while providing flexibility for remote work, enabling you to contribute to impactful projects that are driving the energy transition.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical design of utility-scale solar PV and wind farm projects.
• Develop single-line diagrams, electrical schematics, and layout plans for power generation facilities.
• Perform electrical calculations, including load flow, short circuit, and arc flash studies.
• Select and specify electrical equipment such as transformers, switchgear, inverters, and cables.
• Design grid interconnection systems, ensuring compliance with utility requirements and grid codes.
• Collaborate closely with civil, structural, and mechanical engineers to ensure integrated project design.
• Prepare technical specifications, tender documents, and bill of materials.
• Review designs and provide technical support during the construction and commissioning phases.
• Stay updated on the latest advancements in renewable energy technologies and electrical engineering best practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. A Master's degree or professional registration (e.g., Pr. Eng.) is a significant advantage.
• Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in electrical design engineering, with at least 4 years focused on renewable energy projects (solar PV, wind).
• Proven experience in designing electrical systems for power plants, including LV, MV, and HV components.
• Proficiency in electrical design and simulation software (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, PVSyst).
• Strong understanding of grid interconnection standards, electrical codes, and safety regulations.
• Experience with project management principles and ability to manage design tasks effectively.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Knowledge of battery energy storage systems (BESS) is a plus.
