Job summary

Placements24 is recruiting an Electrical Engineer focused on renewable energy for projects in the Richards Bay region, KwaZulu-Natal. You will design, develop and optimise electrical systems for utility-scale solar and wind projects, applying your expertise across the project lifecycle.

Ideal candidates have a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, at least five years' experience with renewables (three in solar PV or wind), and hands-on skills in power electronics, grid integration, and design

Key Responsibilities

• Design and engineer electrical systems for utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind turbine projects.
• Perform electrical load flow, short circuit, and harmonic analysis for AC and DC systems.
• Specify electrical equipment, including inverters, transformers, switchgear, and cabling.
• Develop single-line diagrams, schematic diagrams, and interconnection designs.
• Ensure compliance with relevant electrical codes, standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE), and grid connection requirements.
• Collaborate with project managers, site engineers, and external stakeholders to ensure successful project execution.
• Conduct site assessments, feasibility studies, and provide technical support during construction and commissioning phases.
• Analyze performance data and identify opportunities for system optimisation and cost reduction.
• Stay current with advancements in renewable energy technology and electrical engineering practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in electrical engineering, with at least 3 years focused on renewable energy projects (solar PV or wind).
• Solid understanding of power electronics, AC/DC systems, and grid integration principles.
• Proficiency in electrical design and simulation software (e.g., PVSyst, AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP).
• Experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS) is a plus.
• Knowledge of South African grid codes and utility requirements.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
• Ability to travel to project sites as required.
