  • Capable of surface prep, crack filling, and finishing.

Responsibilities

  • Paint and prep surfaces by cleaning, sanding, filling, and repairing cracks.
  • Apply primers, undercoats and finishes to achieve high-quality results.
  • Match colours and provide decorative features as required.
  • Maintain safety and comply with hotel standards and regulations.
  • Record maintenance tasks and materials used for reports.
  • Collaborate with Facilities Manager on refurbishments and projects.
  • Assist other trades as required during renovations.

Job description

Luxury Hotel in the Kameeldrift area is looking for an experienced Painter to ensure that all painting, finishing, and surface maintenance work throughout the hotel premises is performed to the highest aesthetic and quality standards, contributing to the preservation of the hotel’s premium appearance and ensuring a safe, well-maintained environment for guests and staff.

Duties
  • Painting and Surface Preparation:
    • Prepare surfaces for painting by cleaning, sanding, filling, and repairing cracks or holes.
    • Apply primers, undercoats, and finish coats using proper techniques to achieve a high-quality finish.
    • Mix and match paints, stains, and varnishes to achieve required colours and textures.
    • Perform decorative and detail work where required (such as feature walls, touch-ups, and textured finishes).
    • Ensure surface preparation and paint application techniques are consistent with manufacturer specifications and hotel standards.
  • Preventative Maintenance and Repairs:
    • Conduct regular inspections of both interior and exterior surfaces to identify deterioration, flaking paint, or other defects.
    • Schedule and carry out preventive touch-ups in high-wear areas such as corridors, guest rooms, and public spaces.
    • Repair damaged walls, ceilings, doors, and trims (minor plastering, sealing, and surface restoration).
    • Maintain detailed maintenance records and report recurring issues to the Facilities Manager for long-term solutions.
  • Equipment; Tools, and Materials Management:
    • Handle; clean, and maintain painting tools, brushes, spray guns, and ladders/scaffolds in working order.
    • Ensure safe storage and correct labelling of paints, solvents, and chemicals in accordance with safety standards.
    • Monitor stock levels of paints and consumables; prepare requisitions for replenishment.
    • Keep the paint workshop and storage areas neat, well-organised, and compliant with safety regulations.
  • Safety; Compliance, and Quality Standards:
    • Observe Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements, using personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
    • Ensure proper ventilation, disposal, and fire prevention practices during painting operations.
    • Identify and report hazards or unsafe conditions immediately to management.
    • Uphold brand and quality standards for finishes in all guest-facing and back-of-house areas.
    • Participate in safety drills, toolbox talks, and mandatory training sessions.
  • Collaboration and Project Support
    • Work closely with the Facilities Manager and other maintenance staff on refurbishment or renovation projects.
    • Assist other tradesmen when painting support is required (e.g., after plumbing or electrical repairs).
    • Provide input during refurbishment planning regarding colour schemes, materials, and surface treatments.
    • Maintain positive relationships with suppliers and contractors to ensure cost-effective and timely procurement.
  • Administrative and Reporting Duties:
    • Record daily tasks, time spent, and materials used on maintenance log sheets.
    • Prepare periodic reports on completed projects and surface condition assessments.
    • Suggest improvements to maintenance schedules or painting methods based on experience and observations.
    • Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to ongoing improvements within the Facilities Department.
  • Requirements:
    • National Senior Certificate (Matric) or equivalent (Essential).
    • Recognised trade test or certificate in painting, finishing, or related maintenance discipline preferred.
    • Health and Safety training or certification would be an advantage.
    • Valid driver’s license and own reliable transport (Essential).
    • Minimum 3-5 years of professional painting experience, preferably in a hotel, resort, or high-end property maintenance environment.
    • Proven track record of executing both routine maintenance and special refurbishment projects.
    • Proficient in painting, varnishing, and wallpaper application.
    • Skilled in basic repair work (e.g., plastering, filling cracks, sealing).
    • Competent in the use of hand tools and painting equipment.
    • Ability to mix and match colours to maintain uniform finishes.
    • Attention to detail and precision in workmanship.
    • Understanding of surface preparation, paint types, colour application techniques, and finishing standards.
    • Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations related to painting and maintenance work.
    • Familiarity with maintenance scheduling and property management systems (advantageous).
