Job summary

Nampak in Durban is seeking an Operator Lacquering Machine to join the Monobloc team. The role focuses on lacquer application and adherence to quality specs, with preference for EE candidates.

The incumbent will operate washing and lacquer equipment, perform changeovers, maintain housekeeping and support autonomous maintenance while upholding safety standards in a busy FMCG manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 (Matric) completion.
  • Successful completion of the Lacquer Operation learnership.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment (FMCG).
  • Understanding of the manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate washing and lacquer machines according to SOPs.
  • Operate lacquer machine and oven to meet quality specs.
  • Perform changeovers within set time allocations.
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and report abnormalities.
  • Record quality checks and stop the line for deviations.
  • Maintain 5S housekeeping and safe working conditions.

Purpose of Role:

To perform the lacquer application process according to the quality specifications and requirements to prevent harmful substances from causing explosions and bursting of the can.

Health and Safety
  • Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and adhere to all safety requirements, policies and procedures of the company to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Wear the correct Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) specific to tasks to ensure personal safety.
  • Use the correct and approved tools and equipment to ensure the work duties are carried out safely with no harm to people.
  • Perform daily safety checks on the equipment to ensure all safety features are functioning properly, injuries to people and damage to equipment and products are prevented.
  • Identify Behavioural Based Safety (BBS) and report any unsafe acts, conditions, safety risks and good safety practices to ensure work is always carried out safely, hazards are addressed, and a safety culture is created.
Lacquer Operations
  • Operate the washing machine according to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) to ensure the cans are properly washed, rinsed and dried in preparation for the lacquer application process.
  • Operate the lacquer machine according to the SOP’s to ensure the equipment functions effectively and safely and the lacquer application process is carried out according to the quality specifications and requirements. Operate the oven according to the SOP’s to ensure the lacquer is cured properly and the application process adheres to the quality specifications and requirements.
  • Separate and remove the poor-quality products to prevent a build-up of scrap or waste on the line.
  • Ensure the raw materials are inspected and available and elevate non-availability to the immediate supervisor.
  • Perform changeovers accurately and within the set time allocation to ensure the equipment functions effectively and quality products are produced.
Autonomous Maintenance
  • Perform the relevant daily equipment inspections of the lacquer equipment to ensure it functions effectively, and any abnormalities are identified and reported timeously to reduce downtime, equipment deterioration and breakdowns.
  • Clean equipment to ensure causes of contamination are identified and eliminated, abnormalities are detected easily, the equipment functions effectively and contamination on products is prevented.
  • Complete job cards for all breakdowns and maintenance to be carried out on the equipment and record all stoppages accurately on thestoppagecharts.
  • Remove jam-ups, reset and run the equipment according to the SOP’s to prevent damage to the equipment or tooling.
  • Assist the artisans during maintenance days and unplanned maintenance to develop and improve their knowledge, skills and ownership of the equipment.
Quality Control
  • Adhere to the quality protocols to perform the routine hourly quality checks to ensure the lacquer application process adheres to the quality parameters, specifications, standards and customer requirements.
  • Record the results of the hourly quality checks in the quality control charts to report the quality results, ensure the application process is within the quality control limits and good quality application processes are maintained.
  • Report any non-conforming processes to the immediate supervisor and remove the poor-quality products from the production line.
  • Stop the line in the event of quality deviations to check the viscosity of the material and adjust the flow rate to improve and maintain the application process within the specified parameters.
  • Participate in problem solving to identify root causes of quality defects and take corrective action to bring the production process back in control.
Operational Excellence
  • Perform daily work routines in accordance with the operational excellence requirements, processes and tools.
  • Take operational ownership to create a “See-It”, “Own-It”, “Solve-It” and “Do-It” Culture.
Housekeeping (5S)
  • Comply with Nampak’s 5S standards (sort, set in order, shine, standardise, sustain) rules and requirements to ensure the work area is always clean, orderly, organised and safe.
Qualifications:
  • Grade 12 (Matric)
  • Successful completion of the Lacquer Operation learnership
Knowledge:
  • Understand the manufacturing environment
  • Good Communication Skills.
Experience:
  • Complete Training modules & pass final assessment. (Includes washing machine).
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment (FMCG)
Competencies:
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • High level of quality and safety awareness
