Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Process Safety Engineer to join the Mossel Bay, Western Cape operations. This field-based role demands a proactive safety approach to maintain high standards across all chemical processes and plant infrastructure at the Mossel Bay site.

You will develop and audit Process Safety Management programs, lead PHAs (HAZOP/LOPA/FMEA), investigate incidents, drive risk reduction, manage changes (MOC), deliver safety training, conduct audits, and maintain complete safety

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience specifically in process safety engineering within the chemical industry.
• In-depth knowledge of PHA methodologies and risk assessment techniques.
• Familiarity with relevant safety regulations and standards.
• Strong understanding of chemical plant operations and associated hazards.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Effective communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
• Certification in Process Safety (e.g., CSP) is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain comprehensive Process Safety Management (PSM) programs.
• Conduct and facilitate Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), including HAZOP, LOPA, and FMEA studies.
• Perform incident investigations and root cause analyses for safety-related events.
• Develop and implement risk reduction strategies and action plans.
• Ensure compliance with relevant safety legislation and industry standards (OSH Act, NFPA codes).
• Oversee the management of change (MOC) process for safety-critical modifications.
• Develop and deliver process safety training to plant personnel.
• Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of plant facilities and operations.
• Advise management on process safety risks and mitigation strategies.
• Maintain safety documentation, including safety procedures, permits, and records.
