Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer in Benoni, Gauteng to lead the design of bespoke automated systems, including robotic cells and material handling equipment. You will create 3D models, drawings and BOMs, and perform stress analyses and motion simulations.

Collaboration with electrical, controls and software teams is essential to ensure integrated, safe and efficient machinery. A strong CAD background and hands-on project delivery are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design focusing on automation, robotics or special purpose machinery.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA).
• Experience with FEA tools for structural and dynamic analysis.
• Strong understanding of motion control, robotics, pneumatics and material handling systems.
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes applicable to automation equipment.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies and complete automated systems using CAD.
• Create detailed 3D models, 2D drawings and BOMs.
• Perform stress analysis, kinematic simulations and engineering calculations.
• Collaborate with electrical, controls engineers and software developers for integrated systems.
• Select materials, components and technologies for automated systems.
• Oversee prototype development and testing, troubleshoot mechanical issues.
• Ensure designs meet specifications, performance, safety and budget constraints.
• Contribute to design process improvements and documentation.
• Interface with clients and project managers to understand requirements and provide updates.
