Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer in Johannesburg to oversee the design and development of complex mechanical systems from concept to production. You will lead a team of engineers, mentor staff, and drive innovation in mechanical design.

You will develop 3D models and detailed drawings in SolidWorks/CATIA, perform FEA for stress and thermal analyses, ensure manufacturability, and work with cross-functional teams to meet timelines and budget requirements in a fast-paced

Qualifications

• Master's degree or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
• 8+ years of progressive mechanical design experience with at least 3 years in a leadership/supervisory role.
• Expert proficiency in 3D CAD software and PDM/PLM systems.
• Extensive experience with FEA software (ANSYS/Abaqus) for stress, thermal, and vibration analysis.
• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, materials science, and DFM.
• Proven ability to lead and motivate engineering teams.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical design process from concept to production release.
• Mentor and manage a team of mechanical design engineers.
• Develop detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using CAD software.
• Perform structural and thermal analysis using FEA tools to validate designs.
• Ensure designs meet functional performance, reliability, and cost requirements.
• Collaborate with electrical, software, manufacturing, and QA teams.
• Oversee prototype creation, testing, and validation procedures.
• Drive continuous improvement of design processes and tools.
