Placements24 seeks a Petroleum Geochemist for our client in Mossel Bay, Western Cape. The role blends laboratory analysis with field data interpretation in a hybrid environment, focusing on origin, migration, and accumulation of hydrocarbons.

You will integrate geochemical data with geological and geophysical interpretations to de-risk exploration in frontier basins and mature provinces, collaborating with geologists, geophysicists, and reservoir engineers to provide crucial insights.

Qualifications

• Master's or Ph.D. in Geochemistry, Organic Geochemistry, Geology, or a related field.
• A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in petroleum geochemistry, preferably within the E&P industry.
• Proficiency with geochemical analytical instrumentation and data interpretation software.
• Strong understanding of organic matter analysis, biomarker interpretation, and isotopic geochemistry.
• Experience with basin modeling software is advantageous.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and data integration skills.
• Effective communication and presentation skills, capable of working in a hybrid environment.
• Ability to contribute to both laboratory-based work and remote data analysis.

Responsibilities

• Analyze organic matter in source rocks, crude oils, and natural gases using geochemical techniques (GC-MS, Rock-Eval).
• Determine maturity, origin, and migration pathways of hydrocarbons.
• Evaluate source rocks and predict type/volume of hydrocarbons generated.
• Integrate geochemical data with seismic, well log, and core data to build subsurface models.
• Assess reservoir quality and hydrocarbon charge risk for projects.
• Interpret data to identify fluid families and relationships.
• Collaborate with geologists, geophysicists, and reservoir engineers to provide insights.
• Prepare detailed technical reports and present findings to teams.
