About the Role
Our client, a forward-thinking entity in the Oil & Gas exploration sector, is looking for a skilled Petroleum Geochemist to join their team in Mossel Bay, Western Cape. This role operates on a hybrid model, combining laboratory analysis and field data interpretation with remote analysis and reporting. The Petroleum Geochemist will focus on understanding the origin, migration, and accumulation of hydrocarbons by analyzing rock and fluid samples. This position is crucial for identifying and characterizing new exploration prospects and optimizing existing fields. You will play a key role in integrating geochemical data with geological and geophysical interpretations to de-risk exploration opportunities in frontier basins and mature provinces.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze organic matter in source rocks, crude oils, and natural gases using various geochemical techniques (e.g., GC-MS, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, stable isotopes).
- Determine the maturity, origin, and migration pathways of hydrocarbons.
- Evaluate the potential of source rocks and predict the type and volume of generated hydrocarbons.
- Integrate geochemical data with seismic, well log, and core data to build comprehensive subsurface models.
- Assess reservoir quality and hydrocarbon charge risk for exploration and development projects.
- Interpret geochemical data to identify different fluid families and their relationships.
- Collaborate with geologists, geophysicists, and reservoir engineers to provide crucial insights.
- Prepare detailed technical reports and present findings to project teams and management.
Requirements
- Master's or Ph.D. in Geochemistry, Organic Geochemistry, Geology, or a related field.
- A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in petroleum geochemistry, preferably within the E&P industry.
- Proficiency with geochemical analytical instrumentation and data interpretation software.
- Strong understanding of organic matter analysis, biomarker interpretation, and isotopic geochemistry.
- Experience with basin modeling software is advantageous.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and data integration skills.
- Effective communication and presentation skills, capable of working in a hybrid environment.
- Ability to contribute to both laboratory-based work and remote data analysis.
Benefits
- Competitive salary package and potential for bonuses.
- Hybrid work arrangement for a flexible work-life balance.
- Opportunity to work on diverse and challenging exploration projects.
- Access to advanced laboratory facilities and analytical tools.
- Professional development and continuous learning opportunities.
- Contribution to critical hydrocarbon exploration efforts in the region.
