PBT Group is seeking an experienced Mainframe Developer to join our Cape Town team on a hybrid contract basis. The role emphasizes COBOL and DB2 expertise within a mainframe environment, spanning the full development lifecycle.

You will work across development lifecycles, performing maintenance, enhancements, and production support while collaborating with stakeholders to deliver robust technical solutions.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Mainframe Developer.
• Strong hands‑on COBOL development experience.
• Strong DB2 experience.
• Solid understanding of mainframe development environments and SDLC processes.
• Experience with application maintenance, enhancements and production support.
• Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a development team.
• Good communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and enhance applications within a mainframe environment.
• Design, code, test and implement solutions using COBOL and DB2.
• Analyse business and technical requirements and translate these into effective technical solutions.
• Perform application enhancements, maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Develop and optimise DB2 queries and database solutions.
• Investigate and resolve production issues and system defects.
• Participate in code reviews, testing and quality assurance activities.
• Collaborate with technical teams, business stakeholders and other delivery teams.
• Produce and maintain technical documentation.
• Support continuous improvement and ensure solutions align with development and architectural standards.
