Placements24 is assisting a client in Port Elizabeth to recruit a Geotechnical Engineer for the expanding mining division. The role focuses on assessing geological risk, soil and rock mechanics, and supporting safe mine engineering and closure planning.

Ideal candidates hold a Master’s in Geotechnical, Civil or Mining Engineering with 5+ years of related mining experience and proficiency in Rocscience, FLAC and Plaxis. Hybrid work is available, with travel for site visits.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Geotechnical, Civil or Mining Engineering.
• Minimum 5 years' geotechnical experience, mining preferred.
• Proficiency in Rocscience, FLAC and Plaxis software.
• Strong soil/rock mechanics and engineering geology knowledge.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
• Willingness to conduct site visits and work in a team.

Responsibilities

• Perform site investigations with soil/rock sampling and lab data interpretation.
• Carry out stability analyses for open pits, underground excavations and tailings dams.
• Recommend geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring programs.
• Provide input for mine design, closure plans and risk assessments.
• Review and approve geotechnical designs and methods.
• Collaborate with project teams to address geotechnical challenges.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a skilled and experienced Geotechnical Engineer to join their expanding mining division based in Port Elizabeth . This crucial role involves assessing and mitigating geological risks associated with mining operations, ensuring the stability of excavations and surrounding infrastructure. You will work closely with geologists and engineers to provide expert advice on soil and rock mechanics, slope stability, and underground support systems. The position offers a blend of site-based work and office-based analysis, contributing to safe and sustainable mining practices in the Eastern Cape .

Key Responsibilities

• Perform site investigations, including soil and rock sampling and laboratory testing interpretation.
• Conduct stability analyses for open pits, underground excavations, and tailings dams.
• Develop recommendations for geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring programs.
• Provide geotechnical input for mine design, closure planning, and risk assessments.
• Review and approve geotechnical designs and construction methods.
• Collaborate with project teams to address geotechnical challenges during all project phases.

Requirements

• Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Mining Engineering.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, preferably within the mining sector.
• Proficiency in geotechnical software (e.g., Rocscience suite, FLAC, Plaxis).
• Strong understanding of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and engineering geology principles.
