Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Geotechnical Civil Engineer to contribute to infrastructure projects in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal. The role focuses on assessing ground conditions, designing foundations and providing expertise on soil mechanics and earthworks.

You will support site investigations through to construction, working on coastal and industrial development projects. The ideal candidate has a Civil Engineering degree with geotechnical focus, 6+ years of geotechnical experience, proficiency

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with geotechnical focus.
• Pr. Eng. registration preferred with SA engineering council.
• Minimum 6 years in geotechnical investigation and design.
• Proficiency in Plaxis and GeoStudio suites.
• Knowledge of South African geotechnical standards and codes.

Responsibilities

• Plan and supervise geotechnical investigations including drilling, sampling and in-situ testing.
• Analyze soil and rock data to assess ground conditions and hazards.
• Design foundations (shallow and deep), retaining structures and earthworks.
• Prepare detailed geotechnical reports, recommendations and drawings.
• Provide technical support on earthworks, piling and foundation construction.
• Interact with clients, regulators and consultants on geotechnical matters.

You will play a vital part in ensuring the stability and safety of various construction projects, from initial site investigations to the final construction phases. The position demands a proactive approach, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work effectively both on-site and in an office setting, supporting a team dedicated to sustainable and resilient development in the region.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and supervise geotechnical investigations, including drilling, sampling, and in-situ testing.
• Analyze soil and rock mechanics data to determine ground conditions and potential hazards.
• Design foundations (shallow and deep), retaining structures, and earthworks for infrastructure projects.
• Prepare detailed geotechnical reports, recommendations, and drawings.
• Provide technical support to construction teams regarding earthworks, piling, and foundation construction.
• Liaise with clients, regulatory bodies, and other consultants on geotechnical matters.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a strong focus on Geotechnical Engineering.
• Professional registration with ECSA (Pr. Eng.) is preferred.
• Minimum of 6 years of experience in geotechnical investigation and design.
• Proficiency in geotechnical software (e.g., Plaxis, GeoStudio suite).
• Familiarity with relevant South African geotechnical standards and codes of practice.
• Ability to conduct site visits and interpret geological and soil conditions.
