Job summary

Smart4 Energy seeks a Professional Electrical Engineer to design, engineer, and deliver commercial and industrial Solar PV and battery energy storage projects in South Africa. You should be registered or pursuing registration with ECSA and bring 3–8 years of PV design experience.

You will work on projects from 100 kW to utility-scale, collaborating with a skilled team to ensure quality, compliance and successful handover.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
• ECSA registration as PrEng or Candidate Engineer.
• 3–8 years of experience in Solar PV design and project engineering.
• Experience on projects from ~100 kW to utility-scale.
• Experience with grid-tied solar, hybrid systems and BESS.

Responsibilities

• Lead or support the design and engineering of Solar PV systems, including layouts and technical documentation.
• Support procurement, installation, commissioning, and project delivery activities.

Our client, a specialist renewable energy business, is seeking a Professional Electrical Engineer to support the design, engineering, compliance, and delivery of commercial and industrial Solar PV and battery energy storage projects. This opportunity is suited to a technically driven engineer who is either professionally registered or actively working towards professional registration.

About the Role

The successful candidate will play a key role in the technical design and implementation of renewable energy projects, supporting the full project lifecycle from design and procurement through to commissioning and handover. Working alongside a highly experienced team, you will gain exposure to a diverse portfolio of Solar PV and energy storage projects while contributing to South Africa's energy transition.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead or support the design and engineering of Solar PV systems, including layouts, specifications, and technical documentation.
• Provide technical support throughout procurement, installation, commissioning, and project delivery activities.
• Ensure projects comply with relevant SANS, IEC, NRS, and municipal regulations.
• Engage with clients, utilities, municipalities, and other key stakeholders.
• Oversee testing, commissioning activities, system validation, and project handover documentation.
• Mentor junior engineers and support ongoing technical development initiatives.
• Stay abreast of emerging renewable energy technologies and identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering.
• ECSA registration as a Pr.Eng, or Candidate Engineer actively pursuing registration.
• 3-8 years of experience in Solar PV design and project engineering.
• Experience working on projects ranging from approximately 100 kW to utility-scale installations.
• Experience with grid-tied solar, hybrid systems, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, PVsyst, Helioscope, DIGSilent, and Microsoft Office.
• Knowledge of SCADA systems, remote monitoring platforms, and grid compliance processes.
