Job summary

Network Engineering in Soweto, Gauteng, invites a Solar Design Engineer to lead the design and technical development of solar PV systems from feasibility to commissioning. You will produce detailed layouts, SLDs, cable routing and BOMs for commercial, industrial and utility-scale projects, and perform sizing, shading and energy-yield analysis.

Qualifications

• Electrical engineering degree or equivalent required.
• Experience in solar PV design for commercial, industrial or utility-scale projects.
• Strong AutoCAD skills and proficiency with PV design software.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop commercial, industrial and utility-scale solar PV systems.
• Develop grid-tied, hybrid and off-grid solar solutions.
• Produce detailed PV layouts, electrical drawings and engineering documentation.
• Develop Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), string layouts, inverter layouts and cable routing.
• Perform system sizing, load assessments, energy-yield calculations and shading analysis.
• Conduct solar simulations using PVsyst, PV*Sol, HelioScope or similar software.
• Select PV modules, inverters, mounting structures, protection equipment and other BOS components.
• Perform DC and AC cable sizing, voltage-drop calculations, earthing and protection calculations.
• Assist with the design and integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
• Conduct technical site assessments and collect information required for project design.
• Prepare BOQs, equipment schedules, technical specifications and tender documentation.
• Develop preliminary designs and technical proposals.
• Review project requirements and optimise designs for technical performance and cost.
• Liaise with clients, suppliers, contractors and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Provide technical support during procurement, construction, installation and commissioning.
• Assist with troubleshooting and system optimisation.
• Ensure designs comply with applicable South African electrical regulations, NRS requirements, SANS standards and municipal requirements.

Minimum Requirements

• BEng / BSc / BTech in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Experience in solar PV design.
• Proven experience with commercial, industrial or utility-scale solar projects.
• Strong AutoCAD skills.
• Proficiency in PVsyst, PV*Sol, HelioScope or similar software.
• Strong understanding of LV electrical distribution systems and grid integration.
• Experience with SLDs, cable sizing, protection and earthing calculations.
• Good understanding of solar PV system components and electrical design principles.
• Knowledge of BESS and hybrid systems advantageous.
• Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel to project sites.
