Placements24 is seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer for a hybrid role in Upington, Northern Cape. You will design electrical systems for utility-scale solar PV plants, perform power system analyses, and support procurement, construction, and commissioning across the project lifecycle.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years in renewable energy, strong knowledge of grid interconnection standards, and proficiency with PVSyst, ETAP, and AutoCAD Electrical.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in electrical design engineering, focused on renewable energy projects.
• Strong knowledge of power system analysis and electrical design for utility-scale projects.

Responsibilities

• Develop electrical designs for utility-scale solar PV projects, including collection systems and grid interconnection studies.
• Perform load flow, short circuit, and protection coordination studies for AC and DC systems.
• Specify electrical equipment such as inverters, transformers, switchgear, cables, and mounting structures.
• Prepare detailed electrical engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications using industry-standard software.
• Conduct site assessments and feasibility studies for new renewable energy project sites.
• Provide technical support during procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
• Ensure designs comply with IEC, IEEE, NRS and client standards.
• Collaborate with civil, mechanical and environmental engineers and project managers for integrated delivery.
• Review EPC proposals for technical compliance and quality.
• Assist in troubleshooting electrical issues during project execution and operation.

About the Role

This role is essential for the design and engineering of electrical systems for utility-scale solar PV plants and related energy storage solutions. You will be involved in all stages of the project lifecycle, from feasibility studies and conceptual design to detailed engineering, procurement, and construction support. The position utilizes a hybrid work model, balancing office-based activities with remote flexibility. Key Responsibilities

• Develop electrical designs for utility-scale solar PV projects, including collection systems, substation layouts, and grid interconnection studies.
• Perform load flow, short circuit, and protection coordination studies for AC and DC systems.
• Specify electrical equipment, such as inverters, transformers, switchgear, cables, and mounting structures.
• Prepare detailed electrical engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications using industry-standard software.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical design engineering, with a significant focus on renewable energy projects, particularly solar PV.
• Solid understanding of power system analysis and electrical design principles for utility-scale projects.
• Proficiency with electrical design and simulation software (e.g., PVSyst, AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP).
• Knowledge of grid codes, interconnection standards, and relevant South African electrical regulations.
• Experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS) is a strong advantage.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and work effectively in a fast-paced project environment.
• Must be eligible to work in South Africa.
