Job summary

Placements24 in Mossel Bay is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to design electrical systems for solar PV projects, produce detailed schematics, and ensure compliance with SA electrical standards. You will work with project teams to deliver reliable energy solutions, including load calculations and interconnection design, on-site in the Western Cape.

The role requires a BEng/BSc in Electrical Engineering and 4+ years of renewable energy design experience.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in electrical design engineering for renewable energy projects.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical, PVsyst or similar CAD software.
• Strong understanding of electrical principles, power systems and renewables.
• Knowledge of SA electrical standards and regulations; grid-tied/off-grid experience.

Responsibilities

• Design electrical systems for solar PV installations, including arrays, inverters, cabling and interconnection.
• Develop single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams and layouts using CAD.
• Perform load calculations, voltage drop and fault current analyses.
• Specify components, ensure quality and performance compliance.
• Collaborate with project managers and construction teams for integration.
• Prepare design reports, BOQ and installation manuals; support construction/commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

• Design electrical systems for solar PV installations, including PV arrays, inverters, DC/AC combiners, cabling, and grid interconnection.
• Develop single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and electrical layouts using CAD software.
• Perform electrical load calculations, voltage drop analysis, and fault current calculations.
• Specify electrical components and equipment, ensuring compliance with quality and performance standards.
• Collaborate with project managers, structural engineers, and construction teams to ensure seamless integration of electrical designs.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant electrical codes, standards (e.g., SANS, IEC, NEC), and local regulations.
• Prepare technical documentation, including design reports, Bill of Quantities (BOQ), and installation manuals.
• Provide technical support during the construction and commissioning phases of projects.
• Stay informed about advancements in solar PV technology and electrical design practices.
• Conduct site assessments and surveys as needed to inform design decisions.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in electrical design engineering, with a specific focus on renewable energy projects, particularly solar PV.
