About the Role

Our client, a prominent engineering consultancy firm, is seeking a skilled Electrical Design Engineer to contribute to critical power distribution projects in Soweto, Gauteng . This role involves the design, development, and implementation of electrical distribution systems for various infrastructure and energy projects. You will be responsible for creating detailed electrical designs, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and collaborating with project teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles, proficiency in design software, and a keen eye for detail. This position requires on-site presence and a dedication to advancing electrical infrastructure in the region.

Key Responsibilities

Design and develop electrical distribution systems, including schematics, single-line diagrams, and wiring layouts. Perform load calculations, short circuit analysis, and protection coordination studies for distribution networks. Select appropriate electrical equipment, such as transformers, switchgear, cables, and protective devices. Ensure designs comply with relevant South African electrical codes, standards (e.g., SANS), and safety regulations. Collaborate with project managers, civil engineers, and other disciplines to integrate electrical designs into overall project plans. Prepare technical specifications, bill of quantities, and design documentation for tender and construction purposes. Conduct site visits and inspections to verify design integrity and provide technical support during construction phases in Soweto . Troubleshoot design-related issues and propose effective solutions. Stay updated on new technologies and best practices in electrical power distribution design.

Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical design, specifically focusing on power distribution systems. Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng.) or Technologist (Pr. Tech. Eng.) registration with ECSA is highly desirable. Proficiency in electrical design software such as AutoCAD, Revit MEP, or similar CAD tools. Experience with power system analysis software (e.g., ETAP, DigSilent PowerFactory) is advantageous. Strong understanding of low and medium voltage distribution systems and associated equipment. Knowledge of South African electrical standards and utility requirements is essential. Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work effectively as part of a project team in a busy environment in Gauteng .
